About Tatenda
I am a multi-award winning environment, climate, agro-ecology, and science investigative journalist from Zimbabwe with twenty years’ experience.
I like covering solutions and constructive journalism stories focusing on media deprived people in marginalized areas.
I also report on illicit financial outflows bleeding Zimbabwe, mainly in the mining sector.
Some of my stories featured in The Washington Post and Mongabay. I have also written for the country’s biggest privately owned daily, The Newsday, as well as its sister weeklies, The Standard and The Independent. He has collaborated with Oxpeckers Investigative Environmental Journalism (South Africa) on a number of projects like the #PowerTracker programme.
I have been a fellow at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford (Oct 2017-March 2018) and hold a Masters degree in Media and Society Studies from the Midlands State University.

This is a transnational collaborative investigation on lithium smuggling from Zimbabwe, to South Africa and Mozambique en-route to China which i did with Oxpeckers Investigative Environmental Journalism. The story exposed how raw lithium-banned for export from Zimbabwe in 2022-is finding its way through the country’s borders, as well as other unconventional routes. The investigation highlighted a regional failure in critical mineral governance, with serious implications for Africa’s role in the global green economy. Impact: Within days of seeking comment from the government, the Zimbabwean Parliament launched a fact finding mission on all the country’s borders posts to curb smuggling and other illicit activities. This story won me the International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award (ACE) in December 2025. Government admitted to the smuggling and banned all exports of unprocessed lithium ores a year before the deadline it had put on the ban.
