Cannock residents express frustration over the slow pace of town regeneration despite a £20 million grant from the Government's Levelling Up fund. The Cannock Chase District Council, now under a Labour-led hung administration with Green Party support, faces voter apathy ahead of the May 2 elections. Ken Hewitt, an 80-year-old former Labour voter, voices his discontent with local governance and recent policy changes, reflecting a broader sentiment of disillusionment among the town's residents.

More than 50 ‘overlooked’ towns to receive £20m over 10 years to regenerate high streets

| Urban Development
The UK government has announced a £1 billion investment plan to regenerate over 50 'overlooked' towns across the UK, with each town receiving £20 million over a 10-year period. This initiative, announced by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak before the Conservative Party conference, aims to revive high streets, combat anti-social behaviour, and stimulate local economies. Towns in Scotland, Wales, and England will benefit, with local town boards being set up to oversee the implementation of the plan. The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities will support these boards, which will also have access to a range of regeneration powers. The funding allocation is based on the Levelling Up Needs Index and the Index of Multiple Deprivation to ensure the most in-need towns are targeted. The plan also includes the creation of a Towns Taskforce to assist in the development and execution of local plans.

The urban landscape of Bovisa, an area known for its industrial glory, is now being reclaimed by nature. The former Officine del Gas, once bustling with noise and life, stand as desolate yet hopeful ruins. These spaces, rich with the stories of past workers, are now inhabited by a generation detached from its history but tasked with passing on its legacy. The area, filled with silent art and sculptures, poses challenges for the future: how to rebuild, regenerate, and rethink such an urban space?

The research contextualizes the alienation policies of real estate assets assigned to the Spanish Ministry of Defence and argues the opportunities and inertia for effective reuse of these assets. The study emphasizes the results of the alienation processes that have gradually taken place in the country, which may be reproducible in other international contexts through corresponding legislation and real estate interest of the organization. Based on the Spanish legal context, two case studies are analyzed to address and characterize the main features of the reuse processes, demonstrating a predominantly speculative approach by the Ministry of Defence when proposing the alienation operations of these assets.

The article, authored by Ugo Poletti, Editor-in-Chief of The Odessa Journal, provides a historical and contemporary overview of the port of Odessa, Ukraine. It highlights the port's rapid development since its founding in 1794 and its current status as the maritime capital of Ukraine, handling 75% of the country's trade. The piece discusses recent initiatives, such as the multimodal trade corridor project with the port of Gdansk, and the strategic importance of Odessa in maritime cargo transportation and seafarer training. Challenges facing the port, including the inaccessibility of the waterfront to residents and the need for urban regeneration, are also addressed. Durban's urban renewal: Who really benefits?
05 Apr 2023

| Urban Regeneration
Durban, South Africa's third-largest city, is experiencing a surge in tourism and urban regeneration, particularly since being named one of the 'New7Wonders Cities' in 2015 and hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The city's inner areas, despite investment, still struggle with poverty and crime, while neighborhoods like Glenwood and Florida Road are becoming gentrified, attracting tourists and digital nomads. The KwaZulu-Natal tourism board promotes international brands like Starbucks as part of the city's appeal. However, the regeneration efforts seem to benefit mainly the wealthy, with areas like the Durban Promenade being revitalized for tourist appeal. Local artisans like Zungo, who makes traditional Zulu beadwork, still face economic challenges, indicating that the city's renewal has not reached everyone equally.

Margaret Agyapong, a resident of Hooper Road in Custom House, is facing severe maintenance issues in her council-owned flat managed by Mears, an outsourcing company. Despite paying high rents, Margaret and other tenants have endured long waits for repairs, infestations, and poor living conditions. Newham Council and PEACH have struggled to regain control of the properties from Mears. The council's temporary arrangement with private firms since 2011 has led to commercial rents for dilapidated council houses. Tenants like Boglarka Filler and Sylvester Achiwu have also reported serious maintenance issues and high stress levels. Despite promises from local politicians like Rokhsana Fiaz, progress on regeneration and improving living conditions has been slow. Mears acknowledges the need for serious attention and capital investment from the council and has offered some compensation and pest control services.
