A recent study published in BMC Medicine highlights potential health risks associated with carrageenan, a common food additive derived from red algae. The study found that overweight individuals consuming carrageenan exhibited increased insulin resistance and inflammation. Stephanie Schiff, a dietitian at Northwell Health, advises avoiding highly processed foods containing carrageenan and suggests alternatives like gellan, carob, guar, and xanthan gums. The study calls for further research on the long-term effects of carrageenan and similar additives, especially in populations at risk for type 2 diabetes.

The article critiques the militarization of resistance in the Israel-Palestine conflict, focusing on the roles of Hamas and Hezbollah. It argues that the shift towards armed resistance, supported by Iran, has led to a strategic disadvantage for Palestinians, making them vulnerable to Israeli military actions. The deaths of key figures like Yahya Sinwar, Ismail Haniyyah, and Hassan Nasrallah are seen as victories for Israel but do not signal an end to the conflict. The piece highlights the lack of a sustainable military strategy among resistance leaders and the resulting impact on Palestinian society.

The Train (1964)
25 Sept 2024  |  www.framerated.co.uk  |  English  |  French Resistance
The Train (1964), directed by John Frankenheimer, is a gripping war action thriller set in August 1944, focusing on the French Resistance's efforts to prevent Nazi Germany from transporting a vast collection of stolen artworks from France. The film explores the moral conflicts of valuing art over human lives, with Burt Lancaster playing the protagonist, Labiche, who becomes embroiled in a personal battle against the Nazi officer Waldheim, portrayed by Paul Scofield. The film is noted for its quasi-realistic style, dynamic cinematography, and moral ambiguity, questioning the self-destructiveness of patriotism and the folly of war. Despite not being a major box office success, it is praised for its craftsmanship and intelligence, offering a thought-provoking narrative without resorting to overtly meaningful scenes.

Fluid flow overcomes antimicrobial resistance by boosting delivery
08 May 2024  |  www.biorxiv.org  |  English  |  Antimicrobial Resistance
Antimicrobial resistance poses a significant global threat, necessitating new strategies beyond chemical optimization. Research using biophysical simulations and microfluidic experiments reveals that increasing fluid flow can enhance the delivery of antimicrobials, overcoming resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The study demonstrates that higher flow rates prevent resistant bacteria from neutralizing antimicrobials, restoring their effectiveness. This finding suggests that incorporating fluid dynamics into antimicrobial development could be a promising approach to combat resistance.

The study investigates the role of the gut microbiota, particularly Akkermansia muciniphila, in influencing castration resistance in prostate cancer. It reveals that the metabolite inosine, produced by Akkermansia muciniphila, can inhibit castration resistance by reducing intestinal barrier damage and lowering serum lipopolysaccharide levels. The research highlights the potential of using gut microbiota composition as a therapeutic target and prognostic indicator for castration-resistant prostate cancer. A predictive model for CRPC progression, incorporating gut microbiota and clinical data, is also developed, demonstrating good predictive performance.
