Daniel Alejandro: Another Cuban Victim of Medical Neglect and Malpractice
07 Jul 2023  |  Cubanet  |  Spanish  |  Medical Malpractice
Daniel Alejandro Llamo Hidalgo, born in July 2009 in Havana, Cuba, was a healthy child except for congenital glaucoma treated at the Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology 'Ramón Pando Ferrer'. After a decade of successful surgeries, medical malpractice left him bedridden. His condition worsened after a surgery in September 2019 due to high ocular pressure and lack of emergency equipment. Subsequent hospital transfers, surgeries, and medical complications, including a hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, further deteriorated his health. His mother, Anabel Hidalgo Rosabal, faced challenges obtaining proper medical care and equipment, including a wheelchair donated by Limay Blanco. Despite seeking help from the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP), she has not received adequate support. Anabel believes with proper care, her son's condition could improve, but is hindered by systemic apathy and negligence.

Butchered While Giving Birth: the Victims of a Cruel Operation in Ireland Are Still Searching for Justice
02 Sept 2023  |  www.vice.com  |  English  |  Medical Malpractice
For over 40 years, Irish women were subjected to the brutal and unnecessary medical procedure of symphysiotomy, driven by the Catholic Church's influence on the Irish state. Survivors, who suffer lifelong physical and psychological trauma, are still fighting for justice and adequate compensation. The Irish government's redress scheme has been widely criticized as insufficient and insincere, with claims that it aims to silence victims without admitting liability. Human rights advocates and politicians argue that the government is failing its responsibilities, leaving survivors without proper restitution.

Woman Loses Legs After Nose Job Goes Horribly Wrong
02 May 2014  |  au.sports.yahoo.com  |  English  |  Medical Malpractice
Sevinc Ceklik, a 25-year-old woman, suffered severe complications after a nose reduction surgery at a private hospital in Istanbul, leading to the amputation of both her legs below the knee. Following the surgery on May 2, 2014, she developed a fever and her condition worsened despite the hospital's reassurances. She was later diagnosed with blood poisoning, and emergency doctors had to amputate her legs to save her life. Ceklik is now seeking compensation of AUD$177,399, while the hospital denies responsibility, attributing the blood poisoning to chicken she ate two weeks post-surgery. The court is awaiting expert reports, with a decision expected in April of the following year.

‘Cut her open already’, heard Maja Simic when she urgently needed a cesarean section
05 Jun 2024  |  NRC  |  Dutch  |  Medical Malpractice
Maja Simic's traumatic experience with a cesarean section in Serbia highlights systemic failures in the healthcare system, including the use of outdated and dangerous medical practices. The article details Simic's legal battle against the state for medical negligence, supported by her lawyer Marina Mijatovic, who is also a parliamentarian for a green-left opposition party. The case underscores broader issues of medical malpractice and lack of accountability in Serbian hospitals, with protests from women's organizations demanding reform. The narrative also touches on political interference, with allegations that healthcare professionals are protected due to political affiliations. Simic's case may reach the European Court of Human Rights, emphasizing the need for systemic change in Serbia's healthcare system.
