In Kashmir’s mountainous meadows, increasing lightning strikes kill livestock, put shepherds at risk
25 Jan 2024  |  scroll.in  |  English  |  Disaster Management
In Kashmir, nomadic herders face increasing threats from lightning strikes, which have killed livestock and put their livelihoods at risk. The number of lightning incidents in Jammu and Kashmir has risen dramatically, with a 172% increase from 2019 to 2022. Despite the growing danger, there is a lack of data collection and reporting mechanisms for lightning-related incidents. The government's compensation for lost livestock is often seen as inadequate by the affected communities. While India has lightning detection networks and early warning systems, their effectiveness is limited by variable cellular network availability and the lack of smartphones among shepherds. Experts suggest that better early warning systems, weather forecasts, and improved disaster management strategies are needed, along with education on safety measures and the construction of weatherproof shelters.

Budgets not begging bowls
26 Nov 2024  |  Zitamar News  |  English  |  Disaster Risk Management
Mozambique faces a recurring budget deficit for its rainy season relief efforts, estimated at MZN9bn ($142m) by the Coordinating Council for Disaster Risk Management. The government is criticized for its reliance on donor funding, often inflating financial needs to secure more aid. This strategy is seen as ineffective, as donor agencies are aware of such tactics and focus on actual needs. The article questions the sustainability of Mozambique's approach to budgeting for disaster relief.

‘Worst nightmare’: South Korea mulls disastrous Scout jamboree
09 Aug 2023  |  www.theguardian.com  |  English  |  Event Management
South Korea's hosting of the World Scout Jamboree has been criticized as a 'national disgrace' due to mismanagement, particularly in the face of a heatwave and an approaching typhoon that forced an evacuation. Despite the country's successful history with large events like the Fifa World Cup and Winter Olympics, the scouting event faced issues with sanitation, heat, and insect-related illnesses. Politicians and the public have raised concerns about the event's organization and budget use, with some of the funds allegedly spent on lavish trips by the organizing committee. The incident has sparked a political blame game and calls for an audit. This event is one of several recent safety disasters in South Korea, prompting discussions about the government's disaster management and organizational culture.

Lowering risks requires understanding their root causes
07 Jun 2023  |  The Christian Science Monitor  |  English  |  Disaster Risk Management
The article discusses the aftermath of the Fuego volcano eruption in Guatemala, which resulted in over 100 deaths and many missing. It highlights the broader issue of poor communities living in danger zones due to economic constraints. Marcel Arévalo from the Latin American Social Sciences Institute attributes this to the displacement caused by single-crop agriculture, which has pushed rural populations to high-risk areas. The World Bank's Sameh Wahba emphasizes the trade-off poor people make between livability and economic opportunity, with dysfunctional housing and land markets exacerbating the problem. The article also touches on the historical context of land access in Guatemala and the role of monoculture farming in reducing land availability for the rural poor. Efforts by organizations like Habitat for Humanity and initiatives in other countries are mentioned as ways to manage and reduce disaster risks. Personal stories from affected individuals like Amanda Santizo and Eufenia Garcia provide insight into the human impact of the disaster.
