Political Message Intensifies Dispute for Control of the Attorney General's Office
14 Mar 2019  |  Gazeta do Povo  |  Portuguese  |  Politics
The term of Raquel Dodge as head of the Attorney General's Office (PGR) in Brazil ends in September, but the electoral race for her successor has already begun. Some prosecutors express discontent with Dodge's management, while others seek new candidates outside the MPF's leadership. A controversial decision by the CSMPF on March 1st, not to regulate the triple list procedure for the new PGR's selection, was seen by some as a political message to suppress early-career prosecutors' candidacies. The triple list, an informal procedure maintained by the ANPR since 2001, is a consultative vote by active prosecutors to form a list for the President's consideration. The current vice-prosecutor, Luciano Mariz Maia, argued that only sub-prosecutors could hold the PGR position, a stance that has caused division within the MPF. The PGR confirmed that the CSMPF's decision had no regulatory effect. The upcoming triple list vote in June, following the ANPR's new board in May, has sparked discussions of potential candidates, with some favoring a spirit of renewal reflecting the 2018 elections. Meanwhile, Raquel Dodge has faced internal opposition, including a recent petition against her proposal to create specialized prosecutors, which was withdrawn anticipating defeat.

Quarrel in the Chamber features torn 'pixuleco' and rain of money
02 Aug 2017  |  veja.abril.com.br  |  Portuguese  |  Politics
During a session of Brazil's Chamber of Deputies, a quarrel erupted as they were analyzing corruption charges against President Michel Temer. The chaos began with an outburst during Deputy Paulo Pimenta's speech, followed by Deputy Wladimir Costa's disruptive actions with 'pixuleco' dolls of former President Lula in prison attire. Opposition members tore up one of the dolls, and Deputy Carlos Zarattini threw fake money in the air, leading to reprimands from Chamber President Rodrigo Maia. The session was marked by disorder, with Maia attempting to restore decorum.

Lobbyists from banks, industries, and transportation are behind the amendments to the Labor Reform
26 Apr 2017  |  The Intercept  |  Portuguese  |  Legislative Influence
Business lobbyists from banking, industry, and transportation sectors are the true authors behind one in three proposed amendments by lawmakers in the discussion of Brazil's Labor Reform. These amendments, which defend employer interests without worker consensus, were submitted by 20 deputies as if they were crafted by their offices. Over half of these proposals were incorporated into the substitute text supported by the Palácio do Planalto and are set to be voted on by the Chamber of Deputies. The general tone of the reform is that agreements between employers and employees will prevail over the law, with the original government text being significantly altered to include these lobbyist-drafted amendments. The article also discusses the informal lobbying practices in Brazil, the potential conflicts of interest among lawmakers, and the broader implications for transparency and the legislative process.

Brazil congress to vote on whether to remove president
02 Aug 2017  |  www.aljazeera.com  |  English  |  Political Crisis
Brazilian President Michel Temer faces a crucial vote in the National Congress that could lead to his removal over corruption charges. Accused of receiving bribes from meatpacking giant J&F, Temer needs significant congressional support to avoid suspension and a Supreme Court trial. Despite low approval ratings and widespread public discontent, analysts believe Temer will likely survive the vote due to strong congressional backing. The political crisis, part of the broader 'Car Wash' investigation, has further eroded public trust in Brazil's democratic institutions.

Obituary: Moro for President
31 Mar 2022  |  www.intercept.com.br  |  Portuguese  |  Elections
The presidential candidacy of Sergio Moro has ended after 141 days, marked by low popularity and high unpopularity. Despite support from judicial associations and parts of the media, Moro's campaign was plagued by arrogance, financial opportunism, and associations with extremist politicians. His attempt to adopt far-right tactics was unsuccessful, leading to the termination of his candidacy by the Podemos party. Moro now shifts his focus to a congressional run, aligning with various political figures.

Convergence: keeping up with Europe's big boys!
15 May 2018  |  www.euronews.com  |  English  |  European Union
EU countries must meet four accession criteria to join the euro, but maintaining strong economic policies is crucial for sustainable convergence. Portugal exemplifies the challenges of real convergence, needing reforms in productivity and education to catch up with richer eurozone countries. The financial crisis exacerbated these issues, leading to a focus on developing in-house skills. Investments like Altran's new Knowledge Centre in Porto highlight positive steps. The IMF's Jeffrey Franks emphasizes tailored economic reforms to enhance productivity and income convergence, noting the importance of learning from past crises.
