Alameda County DA Charges 3 Police Officers With Manslaughter in Death of Mario Gonzalez
06 Oct 2023  |  www.kqed.org  |  English  |  Civil Rights
Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price has filed involuntary manslaughter charges against three police officers involved in the 2021 death of Mario Gonzalez. This decision reverses the previous DA's stance and comes just before the statute of limitations expired. The officers, who continue to work in law enforcement, are accused of causing Gonzalez's death by pinning him face-down, leading to his fatal cardiac arrest. The case has sparked local protests and differing opinions on the officers' actions, with some viewing the charges as overdue and others as politically motivated. The city of Alameda previously settled a civil rights suit related to the incident for $11 million.

Whose voice is it anyway? Actors take on AI copycats
25 Oct 2023  |  www.gulf-times.com  |  English  |  Human Rights
Voice actors, led by Armando Plata, are mobilizing globally to protect their vocal rights against AI cloning. With AI technology advancing and becoming more affordable, voice actors are at risk of losing income and control over their voices. High-profile cases like Morgan Freeman's voice being used without consent highlight the issue. Voice actors are seeking legislative protection, considering voices as personal patrimony and advocating for audio watermarks. The European Union's AI Act is being closely watched as it could set a global standard for synthetic voice use. Meanwhile, organizations like Voices.com are moving towards ethical voice sourcing, and voice actors are negotiating contracts to safeguard against AI misuse. The industry is pushing for global legislation, but until then, they are taking individual precautions.

Sri Lanka stocks close up, turnover tops 1bn
05 Apr 2024  |  economynext.com  |  English  |  Tourism Industry
The Colombo Stock Exchange saw an increase with the All Share Index closing up 0.06 percent. High turnover was driven by trades in John Keells Holdings and Expolanka Holdings. The tourism industry faces criticism over a controversial minimum room rate scheme, which travel agents argue is anti-competitive and could be illegal in other markets. The scheme is said to benefit a cartel of run-down hotels at the expense of newer, more competitive properties. The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority has been criticized for not lifting the price control as promised. Additionally, the State Minister of Indigenous Medicine, Sisira Jayakody, has announced plans to integrate Ayurvedic medicine into the tourism industry with the establishment of 'Body Mantra' massage centres.

Bombs to buzzing beaches: Sri Lanka sees tourism surge after long crisis
19 Dec 2023  |  www.aljazeera.com  |  English  |  Political Crisis
Sri Lanka's tourism industry is experiencing a significant resurgence after years of crises, including the 2019 bombings, the COVID-19 pandemic, and economic and political turmoil. The country recorded over 1.3 million tourist arrivals by December 2023, the highest in four years, with India and Russia being the top sources of tourists. Despite the positive trend, industry stakeholders emphasize the need to attract high-spending tourists to boost revenue. Challenges such as increased taxes, mounting debt, and outdated infrastructure remain, but the government and tourism authorities are optimistic, launching global marketing campaigns and offering incentives to attract more visitors. The sector also faces a brain drain, with many skilled workers migrating abroad. However, efforts are being made to train and retain local talent to support the industry's growth.
