Return of the Troubles
20 Dec 2012  |  Foreign Policy  |  English  |  Good Friday Agreement
Rising tensions in Northern Ireland have led to renewed violence and political unrest, with incidents such as death threats and shootings highlighting the fragility of the region's peace. The Good Friday Agreement, while successful in reducing large-scale violence, has also contributed to the polarization of politics, benefiting extreme parties like Sinn Fein and the Democratic Unionist Party. The region remains deeply divided, with significant social and economic challenges exacerbating the situation. The current unrest is driven by disenfranchised communities, particularly among young people, and underscores the need for a more inclusive political framework to prevent extremists from dictating Northern Ireland's future.

The refusal of Sinn Fein to nominate a new Deputy First Minister has led to the collapse of Northern Ireland's coalition government, prompting early elections. Sinn Fein's Conor Murphy accuses the Unionists of corruption and mismanagement, demanding equality and respect before returning to the power-sharing institutions established by the Good Friday Agreement. Outgoing First Minister Arlene Foster and British Prime Minister Theresa May emphasize the need for stability, especially with Brexit approaching. The snap elections are scheduled for March 2.

Book review: The Handshake
05 Jul 2021  |  newhumanist.org.uk  |  English  |  Culture
Ella Al-Shamahi's book 'The Handshake: A Gripping History' is a timely exploration of the handshake's origins, history, and significance. Al-Shamahi, a palaeoanthropologist and former adherent to strict Islamic law, provides insight into the gesture's primal value in establishing connections. The book debunks myths about the handshake's origins, tracing it back to ancient civilizations and even to Neanderthal ancestors. Despite being a germ transmitter, the handshake has become a global greeting standard, symbolizing compassion, hope, and reconciliation in historical events. The review reflects on the handshake's role in culture and personal interactions, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
