Russia and Ukraine must make genuine efforts towards peace
22 Aug 2024  |  thedailyguardian.com  |  English  |  International Relations
A meeting in Saudi Arabia to discuss the Russia-Ukraine war, which excluded Russia, was seen as an attempt by Ukraine to gain support from the Global South rather than genuine peace negotiations. China's low-level representation at the meeting signaled its lack of interest in substantive peace-making, as the continuation of the war benefits China by increasing Moscow's dependency. The West's belief that China could influence Russia for peace is fading, as the war depletes Western resources and ammunition, potentially benefiting China. The Global South suffers collateral damage from the war, with scarcities in food and fuel. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for peace is highlighted as a message for Russia and Ukraine to negotiate without imposing harsh terms.

The Xi-Zelensky Dialogue: An Insight into China's 'Pragmatic and Opportunistic' Strategy
26 Apr 2023  |  RFI  |  French  |  International Relations
The dialogue between Xi Jinping and Volodymyr Zelensky highlights China's pragmatic and opportunistic strategy amid the Ukraine war. Despite China's diplomatic, political, and economic support for Russia, it has refrained from providing military aid. The conversation, long sought by Zelensky, aims to distance China from Russia and expose Beijing's contradictions regarding sovereignty and territorial integrity. China's position criticizes the US and European countries for escalating the conflict while presenting itself as a responsible power. Ukraine's decision to send an ambassador to China underscores the importance of diplomatic engagement with a permanent UN Security Council member.

Three Tang Dynasty tombs discovered in China with funerary artifacts
19 Mar 2023  |  www.upday.com  |  Italian  |  Cultural Heritage
Chinese archaeologists have discovered three new Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) tombs in Shanxi province, containing 48 pieces or sets of funerary objects. The cave-shaped tombs were found near a sports center in Changzhi city during excavations between April and May of the previous year. A total of 30 tombs were unearthed, with 5 from the Tang Dynasty and the remaining from the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911). The findings, which include well-preserved terracotta statues and a tea set with various textures, provide new materials for the study of the region's ancient funeral and social culture during that period.

Sullivan's China visit expected to set stage for Biden-Xi final meeting
10 Oct 2023  |  www.voanews.com  |  English  |  International Politics
U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan's visit to Beijing aims to manage tensions between the U.S. and China and set the stage for a potential final summit between President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The visit focuses on maintaining communication amidst trade tensions and geopolitical issues, including China's relations with Russia and regional concerns like the South China Sea. While no major breakthroughs are expected, the discussions are crucial for managing the competitive U.S.-China relationship responsibly. The visit occurs ahead of the U.S. presidential election, with Biden's influence waning as a 'lame duck' president. However, Chinese leaders remain interested in engaging with the U.S. administration.

Mechanisms of 3-Hydroxyl 3-Methylglutaryl CoA Reductase in Alzheimer’s Disease
22 Dec 2024  |  MDPI  |  English  |  Neuroinflammation
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative condition with no effective cure due to its complex pathogenesis. Recent studies highlight the role of lipid metabolic dysregulation and neuroinflammation in AD. 3-Hydroxyl 3-methylglutaryl CoA reductase (HMGCR), a key enzyme in cholesterol synthesis, is implicated in AD through mechanisms involving lipid metabolism, oxidative stress, inflammation, microglial proliferation, and amyloid-β deposition. Statins, HMGCR inhibitors, are explored for their potential in AD treatment due to their lipid-lowering and anti-inflammatory properties, though their efficacy remains controversial. The review discusses HMGCR's regulatory mechanisms, its role in AD pathogenesis, and the potential and limitations of statins in AD therapy.

Enhanced Prediction and Evaluation of Hydraulic Concrete Compressive Strength Using Multiple Soft Computing and Metaheuristic Optimization Algorithms
30 Oct 2024  |  MDPI  |  English  |  Metaheuristic Optimization
The study introduces a novel hybrid method for predicting the compressive strength of hydraulic concrete by integrating multiple soft computing algorithms and a stacking ensemble learning strategy. It addresses the limitations of single machine learning models, such as overfitting and low prediction accuracy, by using a metaheuristic-based gray wolf algorithm for parameter optimization and a combination of the LightGBM model with a metaheuristic-based optimization algorithm. The method demonstrates superior predictive performance with a regression coefficient of 0.9329, a mean absolute error of 2.7695, and a mean square error of 4.0891, indicating its potential for application in predicting the service life and assessing the structural damage status of hydraulic concrete structures.

‘Don’t see why not’: China envoy on backing Ukraine’s ’91 borders
27 Jun 2023  |  www.aljazeera.com  |  English  |  China-EU Relations
China's envoy to the EU, Fu Cong, suggested Beijing could support Ukraine's aim to reclaim its 1991 borders, including Crimea. Despite China's historical stance of respecting territorial integrity, Fu emphasized that the resolution of such issues should be negotiated between Russia and Ukraine. China's position on the Ukraine conflict has strained its relations with the EU, which has urged China to take a firmer stance against Moscow. The EU's recent actions, including proposed bans on Huawei and ZTE and sanctions against Chinese entities allegedly supporting Russia, have further complicated ties. China maintains its advocacy for peace and dialogue to resolve the conflict.

Russia and China have signed a series of bilateral agreements to strengthen economic ties, focusing on trade services, agricultural exports, and sports cooperation. The agreements were signed during Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin's visit to Beijing, where he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang. This visit marks the highest-profile trip to China by a Russian official since the start of the war in Ukraine. Trade between the two countries has significantly increased, with a 40 percent rise in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, a Gallup poll indicates a growing disapproval of Russian leadership among its neighbors.

China’s New Rural Lifestyle Movement
10 May 2022  |  www.noemamag.com  |  English  |  Cultural Identity
In southern China's Greater Bay Area, the village of Qixi has become a hub for organic farming, alternative schooling, and a community of eco-conscious youth. This reflects a broader trend of internal migration in China, where urban middle-class citizens seek alternative lifestyles in rural areas, driven by the scarcity of urban resources and a desire to reconnect with traditional values. The Chinese government has shifted focus to rural development, aiming to modernize the countryside and integrate it into the national economy. Intellectuals and young professionals are moving to villages like Qixi, not to reject urban modernity but to create an alternative version that balances modern conveniences with cultural heritage. The article explores the historical context of China's urban-rural divide, the political implications of rural development, and the personal stories of those who have chosen to embrace this new rural lifestyle movement.

Overseas Hong Kong Activists Unswayed by Bounties for Arrest
16 Dec 2023  |  Voice of America  |  English  |  International Relations
Hong Kong pro-democracy activists, now living overseas, have been targeted by the Hong Kong Police Force's National Security Department with bounties for their arrest due to alleged violations of the National Security Law. Activists such as Frances Hui, Joey Siu, and Simon Cheng, who have been advocating for human rights and democracy for Hong Kong, are among those named. Hui, now in the U.S., has been involved in promoting the Hong Kong Sanctions Act, which calls for sanctions against Hong Kong officials. Siu, a U.S. citizen, and Cheng, a former British Consulate employee now in the UK, have also been active in lobbying for sanctions and advocating for Hong Kong's independence. Despite the threats, the activists remain undeterred and continue their advocacy work, viewing the bounties and arrest warrants as intimidation tactics and publicity stunts by the Hong Kong government.

The People's Republic of China is 75 years old, but the mood is subdued
01 Oct 2023  |  nos.nl  |  Dutch  |  75th Anniversary of People's Republic of China
The People's Republic of China marks its 75th anniversary amid subdued celebrations, reflecting economic challenges and a lack of optimism. President Xi Jinping warns of significant trials, urging reliance on the party and military. The Chinese Communist Party, in power since 1949, faces legitimacy issues due to a faltering economy, with deflation, low consumer confidence, and high youth unemployment. Despite stimulus measures from the Central Bank, economic disparities persist, leading to widespread discontent. The regime employs censorship and surveillance to manage criticism, while the public perceives increasing inequality and reduced opportunities compared to previous generations.

Saudi Arabia hosts peace talks for Ukraine without Russia
05 Aug 2023  |  www.elmundo.es  |  Spanish  |  Food Security
Representatives from over 40 countries, including China and the United States, participated in a summit in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, aimed at advancing peace efforts in Ukraine. The summit, notable for Russia's absence, sought to engage countries that have remained neutral in the conflict, such as Brazil and India. Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski emphasized the importance of the summit for global food security, following Russia's withdrawal from a grain agreement. The meeting follows earlier talks in Copenhagen and aims to establish principles for ending the war, including respect for Ukraine's territorial integrity and the withdrawal of Russian troops. China, maintaining a neutral stance, participated with its special envoy, while the US was represented by National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. Saudi Arabia, despite criticism from Washington over oil production cuts, has supported UN resolutions condemning Russia's actions.
