‘Unacceptable’: Biden denounced for bypassing Congress over Yemen strikes
12 Jan 2024  |  the Guardian  |  English  |  Yemen Conflict
Lawmakers from both parties criticized President Joe Biden for authorizing military strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen without congressional approval, reigniting debates over war powers. Biden justified the strikes as a response to Houthi attacks on international maritime vessels in the Red Sea. While some lawmakers supported the action as necessary to deter Iran, many progressives and conservatives condemned the bypassing of Congress, emphasizing constitutional requirements. The strikes also drew attention to Biden's previous stance on war authorization and calls for a ceasefire in Gaza.

The Biden administration has urged a federal appeals court to uphold a ruling that Turkey can be held liable for assaulting protesters during President Erdoğan's 2017 visit to the White House. The State and Justice Departments emphasized that Turkish agents' actions were outside their protective function. The case highlights a shift in U.S.-Turkish relations and reinforces U.S. advocacy for human rights. The bipartisan support for the protesters underscores the importance of democratic values and the protection of peaceful protestors' rights in the U.S.

Unguided ‘dumb bombs’ used in almost half of Israeli strikes on Gaza
14 Dec 2023  |  Stars and Stripes  |  English  |  Military Operations
Almost half of the munitions used by Israel in Gaza since the war began have been unguided bombs, contributing to a high civilian death toll. U.S. and Israeli officials are in discussions about military operations, with the Biden administration urging Israel to reduce civilian casualties. Despite international and domestic pressure, the U.S. has not conditioned military aid to Israel on reducing civilian deaths. High-level visits by U.S. officials aim to influence Israel's military strategy. The conflict has resulted in nearly 18,800 deaths and 51,000 injuries in Gaza, with growing international condemnation and calls for a cease-fire.
