Zimbabwean farmers face severe challenges due to an El Niño-induced drought, leading to widespread crop failure and food insecurity. President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared the drought a national disaster, with 9 million people requiring food aid. Despite efforts to use drought-tolerant crops, farmers like Chipo Mashindi have seen their livelihoods decimated. The Mwenezi Development Training Centre, in collaboration with the World Food Programme and USAID, provided food assistance to 230,000 people, but the need remains dire as the lean season continues. The situation threatens not only food security but also education and healthcare access for many Zimbabweans.

Zanu PF's Farai Marapira refutes these claims, attributing the issue to opposition-controlled council mismanagement. Douglas Mombeshora, Zimbabwe's Health and Child Care Minister, highlighted the disproportionate impact of HIV on women during World Aids Day commemorations. Despite a general decline in new infections, women accounted for a significant majority of new cases, driven by gender inequalities and socio-economic vulnerabilities. The government, in collaboration with the National Aids Council and other partners, is implementing targeted interventions to address these issues, including promoting female condoms and educational programs. While Zimbabwe has made progress in reducing new infections and increasing antiretroviral therapy coverage, Mombeshora emphasized the need for strategic efforts to meet the 95-95-95 targets by 2025 and ultimately end AIDS by 2030.

Chinhoyi councillors have clashed with Mayor Owen Charuza over the suspension of Town Clerk Maxwell Kaitano for alleged gross incompetence. The councillors passed a resolution to suspend Kaitano, but Mayor Charuza blocked the move, citing irregularities and legal concerns. The mayor convened a special meeting, refusing to endorse the suspension and offering Kaitano a second chance. Some councillors feel betrayed by Charuza's actions, insisting that the suspension was necessary to address poor service delivery, not for personal gain as suggested by allegations of seeking residential stands on State land. Kaitano has directed all inquiries to the mayor.

White farmers in Zimbabwe live and die with the toxic legacy of Mugabe’s brutal land grab

|
English
| Economic Impact
The article discusses the aftermath of Zimbabwe's land reform, particularly the 'land grab' initiated by former President Mugabe, which targeted white farmers and some black farmers who had purchased land after independence. The land seizures led to economic decline and political turmoil. In 2020, an agreement called the Global Compensation Deed was signed between farmers' organizations, including the Commercial Farmers’ Union (CFU), the Valuation Consortium, and the government, promising $3.5 billion over five years for farm improvements. However, there is widespread skepticism and division among farmers, with some questioning the agreement's validity and the government's commitment to honoring it. The CFU has lost members and its chief executive, Ben Purcell-Gilpin, resigned over the deal. The government has not shown progress in payments, and a new proposal offers significantly less value, leading to further dissatisfaction among farmers.
