Climate change crisis: Zim farmers face uncertain future
03 Apr 2024  |  Southern Eye  |  English  |  Food Insecurity
Zimbabwean farmers face severe challenges due to an El Niño-induced drought, leading to widespread crop failure and food insecurity. President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared the drought a national disaster, with 9 million people requiring food aid. Despite efforts to use drought-tolerant crops, farmers like Chipo Mashindi have seen their livelihoods decimated. The Mwenezi Development Training Centre, in collaboration with the World Food Programme and USAID, provided food assistance to 230,000 people, but the need remains dire as the lean season continues. The situation threatens not only food security but also education and healthcare access for many Zimbabweans.

Mapfumo claims Zanu PF stole his land
08 Sept 2024  |  The Standard  |  English  |  Political Allegations
Thomas Mapfumo, a renowned Zimbabwean musician, alleges that the ruling party, Zanu PF, revoked his land allocation in Borrowdale, initially granted by Harare City Council. While his contemporaries Oliver Mtukudzi and George Shaya received their land, Mapfumo claims he was denied due to fears of him using it for anti-government music production. Zanu PF's Farai Marapira refutes these claims, attributing the issue to opposition-controlled council mismanagement. The Harare City Council spokesperson, Stanley Gama, calls for a background check before commenting further.

Women bear brunt of HIV: Minister
02 Dec 2024  |  Southern Eye  |  English  |  Public Health
Douglas Mombeshora, Zimbabwe's Health and Child Care Minister, highlighted the disproportionate impact of HIV on women during World Aids Day commemorations. Despite a general decline in new infections, women accounted for a significant majority of new cases, driven by gender inequalities and socio-economic vulnerabilities. The government, in collaboration with the National Aids Council and other partners, is implementing targeted interventions to address these issues, including promoting female condoms and educational programs. While Zimbabwe has made progress in reducing new infections and increasing antiretroviral therapy coverage, Mombeshora emphasized the need for strategic efforts to meet the 95-95-95 targets by 2025 and ultimately end AIDS by 2030.

Chinhoyi councillors, mayor clash over town clerk suspension
24 Mar 2024  |  www.newsday.co.zw  |  English  |  Government
Chinhoyi councillors have clashed with Mayor Owen Charuza over the suspension of Town Clerk Maxwell Kaitano for alleged gross incompetence. The councillors passed a resolution to suspend Kaitano, but Mayor Charuza blocked the move, citing irregularities and legal concerns. The mayor convened a special meeting, refusing to endorse the suspension and offering Kaitano a second chance. Some councillors feel betrayed by Charuza's actions, insisting that the suspension was necessary to address poor service delivery, not for personal gain as suggested by allegations of seeking residential stands on State land. Kaitano has directed all inquiries to the mayor.

ZDF Commander’s Politburo Appointment Is A Poisoned Chalice, Says Exiled Minister
29 Oct 2023  |  zimmorningpost.com  |  English  |  Politics
Exiled former Cabinet minister Walter Mzembi criticizes the appointment of ZDF Commander General Philip Valerio Sibanda to the Zanu PF Politburo as a move that undermines the constitutional separation of powers in Zimbabwe. He views the appointment as an extension of the military's influence in the ruling party, potentially creating conflicts of interest and issues for future non-military leaders. President Emmerson Mnangagwa's decision to appoint Sibanda and Rose Mpofu to the Politburo follows the military intervention that led to Robert Mugabe's ousting in 2017.

Are we headed for another coup? (Part II)
08 Sept 2024  |  The Standard  |  English  |  Zimbabwe Politics

It examines factors such as Emmerson Mnangagwa's unpopularity, potential ambitions of Constantino Chiwenga, and the role of the military. The piece speculates on various coup scenarios, including a smart coup, direct coup, and assassination, while considering the challenges and international implications. Zimbabwe's revised PVO Amendment Bill will restrict efforts to relieve hunger
18 Jun 2024  |  Alliance magazine  |  English  |  Food Aid
Zimbabwe is facing a severe drought, leading to widespread food shortages and reliance on aid. Despite this, the government is pushing a controversial PVO Amendment Bill, which critics argue will restrict the efforts of NGOs to provide necessary aid. The bill, intended to curb money laundering and political lobbying, has faced backlash for potentially closing democratic space and limiting donor funding. Public hearings on the bill were marred by violence, and opposition figures have condemned it as oppressive. President Mnangagwa has assured that no Zimbabwean will die of starvation, citing government initiatives to support food security.

Nduna granted US$100 bail
24 Oct 2024  |  Southern Eye  |  English  |  Politics
Dexter Nduna, a ZANU PF resources mobilizer and former Chegutu West MP, was granted US$100 bail by the Chinhoyi High Court after being arrested for allegedly collecting parking fees illegally in Chegutu. The High Court overturned a previous decision by a Chegutu magistrate, citing a lack of compelling reasons to deny bail. Nduna's lawyer, Unite Saizi, successfully appealed the decision, arguing that the magistrate had misdirected herself. The State accuses Nduna of misrepresenting to motorists that his linked company, Team Chapter, was authorized to collect parking fees.

Zimbabwe Says It Lost in Excess of $150 Billion to Sanctions
11 Oct 2023  |  www.voanews.com  |  English  |  Human Rights
Zimbabwe's vice president, Constantino Chiwenga, claims the country has lost over $150 billion due to sanctions imposed by the EU and the US since the early 2000s, which he describes as 'heinous and illegal.' The sanctions, which include financial restrictions, are said to hurt not only Zimbabwe but the entire southern Africa region. While some experts like Stevenson Dhlamini agree with the government's assessment, others like Prosper Chitambara argue that multiple factors, including corruption and external shocks, have impacted the economy. Despite the sanctions, Chiwenga remains optimistic about Zimbabwe's economic future, attributing the sanctions to the country's land redistribution policies.

Heal Zimbabwe Trust has condemned statements by Zanu PF national spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa about the ruling party controlling food aid distribution, fearing this could worsen food insecurity and marginalize opposition supporters. White farmers in Zimbabwe live and die with the toxic legacy of Mugabe’s brutal land grab
06 Jan 2024  |  The Telegraph  |  English  |  Economic Impact
The article discusses the aftermath of Zimbabwe's land reform, particularly the 'land grab' initiated by former President Mugabe, which targeted white farmers and some black farmers who had purchased land after independence. The land seizures led to economic decline and political turmoil. In 2020, an agreement called the Global Compensation Deed was signed between farmers' organizations, including the Commercial Farmers’ Union (CFU), the Valuation Consortium, and the government, promising $3.5 billion over five years for farm improvements. However, there is widespread skepticism and division among farmers, with some questioning the agreement's validity and the government's commitment to honoring it. The CFU has lost members and its chief executive, Ben Purcell-Gilpin, resigned over the deal. The government has not shown progress in payments, and a new proposal offers significantly less value, leading to further dissatisfaction among farmers.
