Tau Theory-Based Flare Control in Autonomous Helicopter Autorotation
29 Dec 2023  |  MDPI  |  English  |  Control Systems
A novel trajectory generation and control architecture for fully autonomous helicopter autorotation flare is proposed, combining rapid path generation using optical Tau theory with a nonlinear dynamic inversion (NDI) control law. The system is designed to handle varying flight conditions without the need for gain scheduling. Simulations demonstrate the NDI control law's effectiveness in executing autorotative flare in a UH-60 aircraft, with autonomous trajectories compared to piloted simulations to assess performance. The study also explores the combinations of downrange distances and altitudes that result in successful autorotative landings, suggesting the method's potential for real-time control and reachability predictions in autorotation flare.

14 Jun 2023  |  adventure.com  |  English  |  Sustainability
Marker Wadden, a human-made archipelago in the Netherlands, was created to restore ecological balance and attract biodiversity to the Markermeer lake. Despite its success in attracting various bird species and plants, concerns about the islands' long-term sustainability and maintenance costs persist. Experts are divided on the project's efficacy, with some praising its ecological benefits and others questioning its longevity and impact on natural processes. The project faces challenges such as subsidence, erosion, and funding for future maintenance, raising questions about its ability to provide lasting ecological benefits.

The effects of the ongoing El Niño will leave 110 million people in need of food aid
02 Nov 2023  |  www.epe.es  |  Spanish  |  Food Security
The ongoing El Niño phenomenon is disrupting global precipitation patterns, impacting food production and potentially leaving 110 million people in need of food aid. The FEWS NET map, developed with input from NASA, NOAA, and various universities, predicts significant effects on staple crops like wheat, maize, rice, soy, and sorghum. El Niño is expected to reduce maize yields in Southern Africa and Central America due to drought, while improving global soy yields. Enhanced rainfall may aid drought recovery in the Horn of Africa and Afghanistan. FEWS NET's analysis aids USAID in understanding humanitarian needs, particularly in regions heavily reliant on subsistence farming.

Israel-Gaza war sets Biden at odds with youth of America
09 Dec 2023  |  www.aol.com  |  English  |  Youth Activism
The Israel-Gaza war has sparked significant opposition among young Americans, particularly Democrats, who are increasingly critical of President Joe Biden's support for Israel's military campaign. This generational divide is reshaping the foreign policy debate in Washington and could impact Biden's re-election prospects in 2024. Protests and calls for a ceasefire have been led by a diverse coalition of young activists, including Arab, Muslim, and progressive Jewish groups. The conflict has also highlighted the role of social media in shaping public opinion and the intersection of Palestinian solidarity with other social justice movements.

States vs. Locals: The Never-Ending Conflict
07 Dec 2023  |  www.governing.com  |  English  |  Political Conflict
The article discusses the historical and ongoing conflict between state and local governments in the United States, a phenomenon termed 'abusive state pre-emption' by legal scholar Richard C. Schragger. It traces the roots of this conflict back to the nation's founding and highlights how the balance of power has shifted over time, particularly with the advent of the New Deal and Great Society programs. The piece also examines the current political landscape, where conservative state officials are increasingly limiting the powers of liberal local governments, citing examples from Florida and Texas. The article suggests that this trend is intensifying political divisions and challenges the optimistic view of American democracy presented by Alexis de Tocqueville in the 19th century.

U.S. cereal rye winter cover crop growth database
07 Mar 2024  |  www.nature.com  |  English  |  Data Collection
The article presents a study on cereal rye, a common winter cover crop in the United States, focusing on its biomass production and associated ecosystem services. The study compiled plot-level observations from various agronomic, soil, and climate conditions across the eastern half of the United States. Data included biomass, nitrogen content, carbon to nitrogen ratio, and other agronomic and soil metrics. The study aimed to help farmers optimize cover crop termination timing for maximum benefits and support the adoption of winter cover crops for climate resilience and reduced soil erosion. The dataset excluded outliers and observations from sites terminating cover crops after May. Statistical analysis was performed using R software, and the final dataset showed a mean cereal rye biomass of 3,428 kg ha−1. The variability in biomass production was attributed to differences in agronomic, soil, and climate factors.

AI-Written Homework Is Rising. So Are False Accusations.
01 Oct 2023  |  www.thedailybeast.com  |  English  |  Academic Integrity
The rise of AI-written homework has led to an increase in false accusations of academic dishonesty, causing stress and potential academic failure for students. Critics argue that AI detectors, while intended to curb plagiarism, are unreliable and biased, particularly against non-native English speakers and neurodivergent individuals. Experts call for a reevaluation of how AI tools are used in education, advocating for a balanced approach that includes conversations with students rather than outright judgments. The rapid advancement of AI technology poses challenges for educational institutions, necessitating a more thoughtful and informed application of AI detectors.

In Eagle Nirvana, Avian Flu is Decimating America’s National Bird
01 Jun 2023  |  www.rsn.org  |  English  |  Bald Eagle Conservation
Avian influenza is severely impacting bald eagle populations across the United States, with significant declines in nest success rates and eagle deaths reported in states like Michigan, Florida, and Georgia. Researchers, including William Bowerman, are witnessing empty nests and dead eagles, attributing the losses to the H5N1 strain of avian flu. Despite conservation efforts that had previously boosted eagle numbers, the virus poses a new threat, reversing decades of progress. The disease, primarily affecting wild birds, has also been found in domestic poultry, raising concerns about potential human infection. While some nests remain unaffected, the overall outlook for bald eagles is concerning, with researchers continuing to monitor and study the situation.

How Lightning Flashes Help Predict Storms
01 Oct 2023  |  IEEE Spectrum  |  English  |  Technology
Meteorologists, led by Ming Xue at the University of Oklahoma, have developed a new method to incorporate lightning data into thunderstorm-forecasting models, using data from NOAA's GOES-16 and GOES-17 satellites. This approach, tested against a 2018 storm in Kansas and Nebraska, matched the accuracy of previous models while reducing computational costs. The study highlights the potential of satellite-based lightning data to improve weather forecasts, though further testing and calibration are needed for different weather systems.

The article introduces the TransRUL model, a transformer-based multihead attention model designed to enhance the prediction of the remaining useful life (RUL) of lithium-ion batteries. The model addresses challenges in traditional RUL prediction methods by incorporating advanced techniques such as dual encoders, positional encoding, and multi-head attention. The research demonstrates that TransRUL outperforms existing models in terms of mean absolute error, root-mean-squared error, and R2 values, offering a robust framework for battery management systems. The study highlights the model's potential to improve battery reliability and safety, though it notes limitations in computational complexity and dataset scope.

The Tumring project in Cambodia, designed to protect 68,000 hectares of rainforest, is experiencing significant deforestation, with discrepancies between official reports and satellite data. The project, overseen by Verra and supported by the Korean government, has sold carbon credits to companies like Marathon. Investigations by Unearthed and Climate Home reveal that forest loss in Tumring is underreported, raising concerns about the effectiveness of carbon offsetting projects. The global carbon market faces scrutiny over quality control, with calls for greater transparency and standardized monitoring. Other projects in Cambodia and Brazil show varying levels of accuracy in reporting forest loss.
