09 Nov 2023  |  Foreign Policy  |  English  |  Ethnic Nationalism

The article highlights the perspectives of ethnic minorities and second-generation Italians who are advocating for the reform, as well as the challenges they face in gaining political representation and recognition. It also touches on the broader issues of xenophobia and the political exploitation of immigration. The cancer patients being treated in their homes due to COVID
02 Jun 2021  |  www.aljazeera.com  |  English  |  Healthcare
Cancer patients in Italy, particularly in Lombardy, have faced significant challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to the implementation of home care programs to continue their treatment. The Cremona public hospital launched a home assistance unit for cancer patients, supported by the local NGO Medea and private funders. The pandemic has caused delays in surgeries and treatments for non-COVID patients, exacerbating the stress and isolation experienced by cancer patients. The reorganization of hospital resources to prioritize COVID-19 patients has led to postponed surgeries and diagnostic tests, impacting the timely treatment of cancer patients. Experts emphasize the need for a plan to recover lost time in healthcare services to prevent further emergencies for non-COVID patients.

Po Valley: Air pollution is causing serious health risks for more than 16 million Italians
05 Oct 2023  |  malaysia.news.yahoo.com  |  English  |  Environmental Issues
Air pollution in Italy's Po Valley poses serious health risks to over 16 million residents, with high levels of nitrous dioxide, ozone, and particulate matter contributing to increased cancer rates and premature deaths. Despite economic advantages, the region's industrial activities and geographical features exacerbate pollution. Efforts to reduce emissions have seen some success, but significant investment and better public awareness are needed to meet EU targets. Environmental organizations and experts call for more ambitious policies and improved communication to address the issue.

Italian scholars boycott Israeli academic institutions
30 Jan 2016  |  Al Jazeera  |  English  |  Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
Over 170 Italian scholars from more than 50 universities and research organizations have pledged to boycott Israeli academic institutions, accusing them of complicity in human rights violations. The boycott is part of the BDS movement, which seeks to pressure Israel to grant equal rights to Palestinians and end occupation. The initiative has sparked debate, with some Italian academics supporting it as a stand for Palestinian rights, while others, including the Association of University Heads in Israel, condemn it as divisive and racist. The boycott specifically targets the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology for its military technology developments.

Diagnostic Value of the CSF α-Synuclein Real-Time Quaking-Induced Conversion Assay at the Prodromal MCI Stage of Dementia With Lewy Bodies
01 Jul 2021  |  n.neurology.org  |  English  |  Biomarkers
The study investigates the accuracy of the CSF α-synuclein real-time quaking-induced conversion assay in identifying patients with mild cognitive impairment due to probable Lewy body disease. The assay was applied to cerebrospinal fluid samples from two independent cohorts, demonstrating high sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy in identifying patients with MCI due to Lewy bodies. The findings suggest that the CSF α-synuclein RT-QuIC is a robust biomarker for prodromal dementia with Lewy bodies, and further studies are needed to explore its added value to current research criteria.

Egyptian Researcher Patrick Zaki Pardoned Day After Sentencing
19 Jul 2023  |  inshallah.substack.com  |  English  |  Middle East Politics
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi pardoned Patrick Zaki, a detained rights researcher, a day after he was sentenced to three years in prison for spreading false news about discrimination against Egypt's Christian Copt community. The decision followed protests from the Italian government, the US State Department, and various human rights groups. Mohamed El-Baqer, a lawyer for activist Alaa Abdel Fattah, was also pardoned. Zaki, a graduate student at the University of Bologna, was arrested in Egypt in February 2020 and spent 22 months in pre-trial detention. His case drew international condemnation, particularly in Italy, where he had been studying. Zaki is expected to arrive in Rome on July 22.

History of Women in Medicine
25 Sept 2021  |  News-Medical  |  English  |  Gender Equality
Women have been integral to the practice of medicine since antiquity, contributing significantly despite historical barriers. Notable figures include Metrodora, Aspasia, and Elizabeth Blackwell, who broke gender barriers in their respective eras. The 19th and 20th centuries saw significant advancements, including the establishment of women's medical colleges and increased female participation in medical education. However, challenges such as gender bias, salary gaps, and family-work conflicts persist, contributing to the 'Leaky Pipeline' phenomenon where women drop out of academia and medical practice. The Women's Health Movement in the 1970s and subsequent legislation helped increase female representation in medical schools, but disparities remain in faculty positions and leadership roles.
