Uganda: an electric anti-poaching initiative succeeds in preserving wildlife
24 Sept 2021  |  www.africanews.com  |  English  |  Anti-Poaching
An electric fence initiative in Uganda, introduced three years ago, has successfully reduced human-wildlife conflict, particularly with elephants. Local farmer Zikulabe Isaac, whose land borders the park, has seen a positive change since the fence's erection in 2018, allowing him to secure his crops and profits. The fence, which currently extends for 43.8 kilometers, is being expanded towards the DRC border. The project, a collaboration between Space for Giants and the Uganda Wildlife Authority, aims to address crop raiding issues and promote harmonious coexistence between local communities and wildlife.

‘No to Oil Drilling’: Ugandan Environmentalists to Museveni
01 Mar 2023  |  www.voaafrica.com  |  English  |  Oil Exploration
Uganda, in partnership with TotalEnergies and China National Offshore Oil Corporation, has begun assembling machinery for oil exploration, with plans to drill wells near Lake Albert and Murchison Falls National Park. An environmental impact report identified risks, but NEMA believes mitigation measures are sufficient. Total's Alex Male Nsereko detailed environmental precautions being taken. Uganda Wildlife Authority's Wilson Kagoro emphasized the importance of following park rules. Dickens Kamugisha of the Africa Institute for Energy Governance criticized NEMA for approving the project without clear mitigation plans.

Fear rises as government militarises civilian institutions
01 May 2018  |  sunrise.ug  |  English  |  Governance
Dr. Busingye Kabumba of Makerere University warns of the negative consequences of the Uganda People's Defence Forces' increasing control over civilian institutions, which he views as antithetical to democracy. The militarization trend has sparked concern among academics, civil society, and politicians, with calls for reversing this trajectory and for regime change. Government officials defend the legality of military involvement in public institutions, while critics argue it reflects a failure to properly manage and resource these institutions, leading to poor performance and human rights suppression. The UPDF is currently deployed in various agencies, including NIRA and the CAA, with mixed results in initiatives like Operation Wealth Creation.

Sigh of relief as UWA electric-fences off animals from Nwoya gardens
20 Jul 2021  |  Kazi Njema News  |  English  |  Agriculture
The article discusses the longstanding conflict between wildlife from Murchison Falls National Park and the residents of Nwoya District in Uganda. Wild animals, including elephants, rhinoceroses, and buffaloes, have been destroying crops and causing fatalities among the local population. The government of Uganda has implemented various measures to mitigate this issue, such as trench digging and training community scouts, but these were not effective until the construction of an electric fence was adopted. The first phase of the electric fence project, funded with Shs50b, began in January 2020 and has shown positive results in preventing wildlife from encroaching on farmland. Local farmers have expressed relief and optimism as their crops are now protected, and they can focus on farming without the threat of animal destruction. The Uganda Wildlife Authority plans to continue this fencing project in phases due to its effectiveness.

Major African pipeline project leaves Ugandan farmers at the mercy of climate change

The construction of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) by TotalEnergies has led to severe flooding and food insecurity in Uganda's Albertine region, affecting local farmers like John Jabila and Annet Katushabe. The project, which involves large-scale deforestation, has been criticized by environmentalists and local officials for exacerbating climate change and disrupting ecological balance. TotalEnergies denies these accusations, attributing the floods to historical patterns. Legal actions and petitions have been filed against the company, highlighting the ongoing conflict between development and environmental sustainability.

Uganda Trumpets 'Vuvuzelas' as New Tool to Deter Elephant Attacks
30 Mar 2015  |  www.voanews.com  |  English  |  Human-Wildlife Conflict
In Uganda, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is distributing vuvuzelas to villagers near national parks as a non-lethal method to deter elephant attacks. Traditional methods like scare shooting have become ineffective, prompting the use of the loud plastic trumpets, which irritate elephants without intimidating them. This approach is part of UWA's broader efforts to find diverse solutions suitable for different ecosystems, addressing challenges such as rocky terrains and wetlands. The vuvuzela has proven effective so far, offering a violence-free solution to human-elephant conflicts.

Uganda’s Quest For Sustainable Energy Poses Fresh Environmental Threats
01 Oct 2023  |  www.ubuntutimes.com  |  English  |  Fossil Fuels
Uganda's significant oil discoveries have attracted major investments but also raised environmental concerns, particularly with the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project. The pipeline, led by Total and other multinational companies, threatens local communities and biodiversity, crossing sensitive areas like Lake Victoria. Despite promises of economic benefits, local residents face displacement and inadequate compensation. Environmentalists argue that Uganda should focus on its abundant renewable energy resources instead of fossil fuels. The project has sparked significant opposition from local and international groups, highlighting the broader debate between economic development and environmental sustainability.
