Inside the student movement that forced Ireland’s Trinity College to divest from Israel
09 May 2024  |  Waging Nonviolence  |  English  |  Israel-Palestine Conflict
Trinity College Dublin students successfully pressured the university to divest from Israeli companies through a strategic protest and encampment. The movement, led by students like Ben and László Molnárfi, was part of a broader BDS initiative and involved significant support from faculty and staff. The protest highlighted the financial impact on the university and leveraged historical and political contexts to gain traction. Despite facing fines, the students' actions have inspired similar movements across other Irish universities. The article critiques the Irish government's slow response to recognizing Palestine, contrasting it with the proactive stance of the student movement.

Synthesis and Pro-Apoptotic Effects of Nitrovinylanthracenes and Related Compounds in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL) and Burkitt’s Lymphoma (BL)
14 Dec 2023  |  MDPI  |  English  |  Anticancer Agents
Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) is a prevalent B-cell malignancy in developed countries, while Burkitt’s lymphoma (BL) is a rare, aggressive non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. This study reports the synthesis and antiproliferative effects of (E)-9-(2-nitrovinyl)anthracenes and related nitrostyrene compounds in CLL and BL cell lines. The nitrostyrene scaffold was identified as a lead structure for developing effective compounds targeting BL and CLL. The synthesized compounds demonstrated potent antiproliferative and pro-apoptotic effects, with some showing significant activity in CLL cell lines, outperforming current chemotherapeutic drugs. The study highlights the potential of these compounds for further development as novel chemotherapeutics for CLL.

Poland approaches elections with 45% undecided and eyes on female vote
10 Oct 2023  |  es.euronews.com  |  Spanish  |  Women's Voting Influence
As Poland approaches its parliamentary elections, a significant 45% of voters remain undecided, with a notable focus on the female vote. Women, who tend to be more pro-democracy and progressive, could play a decisive role if they choose to vote. The campaign 'Mujeres a las urnas' aims to encourage female participation, addressing common reasons for abstention such as distrust in politicians. Despite some success, a portion of the population remains skeptical about the political process, advocating for direct democracy instead.

A Giant Booze Company Is Telling Ireland to Drink Less
27 Feb 2015  |  www.vice.com  |  English  |  Alcohol Consumption
In Ireland, Diageo, the world's largest spirits producer, is funding a campaign called 'Stop Out-of-Control Drinking' to address excessive alcohol consumption. Critics argue that Diageo's involvement is contradictory given their financial interest in alcohol sales. The campaign has been scrutinized for its board members' backgrounds, including ties to the tobacco industry and opposition to alcohol sponsorship bans in sports. Health professionals and advocacy groups emphasize the need for evidence-based public health campaigns, rather than industry-backed initiatives, to effectively tackle Ireland's alcohol problem.

Here’s Why Some People Say They Hear Dead People
17 Jan 2021  |  Forbes  |  English  |  Paranormal
New research explores why some people claim to hear or sense the dead, focusing on spiritualist mediums who are more prone to immersive mental activities and unusual auditory experiences. The study found that high levels of absorption and susceptibility to auditory phenomena are linked to more frequent clairaudient communications. Spiritualist mediums often experience these communications as part of their daily lives, with many reporting hearing the voices of the deceased. The research suggests that these experiences may be linked to early life tendencies and abilities rather than just belief in contacting the dead. The study also highlights the potential benefits of understanding these experiences for broader mental health applications.

What lies beneath: Protected habitats under pressure
15 Jul 2018  |  www.independent.ie  |  English  |  Agriculture
Ireland's protected habitats are under significant pressure, with 81% of protected land experiencing intense human strain. Key factors include urbanization, agriculture, and infrastructure development. Despite stringent legislative frameworks like the EU Habitats and Birds Directives, conservation efforts are hampered by insufficient resources and conflicting governmental plans. Experts emphasize the need for effective agri-environment schemes, sustainable farming practices, and increased public engagement in nature conservation. Positive initiatives such as the BurrenLIFE and AranLIFE projects, as well as local conservation efforts like the BRIDE project, demonstrate potential pathways for habitat restoration and protection.

Banking on a Ph.D. 'Ecosystem' to Drive New Economies
02 Dec 2009  |  www.nytimes.com  |  English  |  Research and Development
Countries are increasingly looking to advanced education, particularly doctoral and postdoctoral programs, to drive economic recovery and gain a competitive edge in global research and development. Ireland has made significant strides with initiatives like the Innovation Taskforce and partnerships between top universities and the government. Australia and Canada are also investing in doctoral education to address demographic challenges and increase Ph.D. production. In contrast, New Zealand and the United States are cutting back on advanced education funding due to economic constraints, which could have long-term negative impacts. The OECD emphasizes the importance of investing in education for economic recovery, while experts warn that the U.S. is losing its ability to retain top international talent, posing risks to future innovation and economic growth.

Apple Is Said to Owe Back Taxes to Irish Government

This decision is expected to heighten tensions between the U.S. and Europe over corporate tax policies. The ruling, which could amount to hundreds of millions of dollars, claims that Apple received preferential tax treatment from Ireland, violating state-aid rules. The Irish government and Apple plan to appeal the decision, which could take years to resolve. The case is part of a broader effort by the European Commission to ensure that profits are taxed where they are made, following similar actions against other multinational corporations.
