I love to finish them off': the American mercenaries behind assassinations in Yemen
25 Jan 2024  |  www.terra.com.br  |  Portuguese  |  Mercenaries
A BBC investigation concluded that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) funded politically motivated assassinations in Yemen, exacerbating the conflict involving the Yemeni government and various factions. American mercenaries provided anti-terrorism training to UAE officers in Yemen, which was passed on to locals, leading to a surge in political killings. Despite their stated goal of eliminating jihadist groups, the UAE recruited former Al-Qaeda members for a security force to fight the Houthi movement and other armed factions. The UAE government denied allegations of assassinating individuals unconnected to terrorism. The conflict has seen over 100 political assassinations in three years, hindering the return of the internationally recognized Yemeni government and potentially fostering Houthi attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea. The US announced plans to reclassify the Houthi group as a global terrorist entity. The investigation revealed that the UAE-funded Southern Transitional Council operates independently of the Yemeni government, with a unit trained to conduct assassinations. Human rights lawyer Huda al-Sarari, who investigates human rights violations by UAE-backed forces, has received death threats, and her son was killed by a member of the UAE-supported Counter-Terrorism Unit. The UAE government maintains that it has acted in accordance with international law during operations in Yemen.

Yemen in 2021
24 Mar 2025  |  www.khuyut.com  |  English  |  Political Instability
In 2021, Yemen continued to face severe challenges due to the ongoing war, economic collapse, and humanitarian crises. The conflict between the Ansar Allah (Houthis) and the Internationally Recognized Government, along with the Southern Transitional Council, led to significant military and civilian casualties, displacement, and economic instability. The local currency depreciated dramatically, exacerbating living conditions. Political agreements like the Riyadh Agreement failed, and peace efforts by international bodies, including the UN, struggled to make progress. Despite these challenges, Yemenis found a moment of unity and joy in the national junior football team's victory in the West Asian Championship.

Fight over south renews intra-group strife in Yemen
01 Oct 2023  |  Daily Sabah  |  English  |  Middle East Politics
Disputes among Yemen's groups fighting against the Iranian-backed Houthis intensified after UAE-backed groups declared autonomy in the south, challenging the Saudi-backed central government. The Southern Transitional Council's move disrupted Saudi efforts and highlighted UAE-Saudi differences. Despite a previous agreement to unite against the Houthis, hostilities resumed due to unresolved power-sharing issues. The central government, allied with the Islah Party, faces opposition from the UAE, which views the party as a security threat. Both Saudi Arabia and the UAE rejected the STC's unilateral decision, urging adherence to the Riyadh Agreement for stability.

Is Yemen's Future a Permanently Fractured State?
23 Aug 2023  |  DAWN  |  English  |  Saudi-Emirati Relations
In mid-June, political and tribal figures from Yemen's Hadhramaut governorate announced the formation of the Hadhramaut National Council in Riyadh, aiming to represent Hadhrami interests. This move highlights the deepening rifts within Yemen, exacerbated by the stalled Saudi-Houthi peace talks that excluded other key factions like the Presidential Leadership Council and the Southern Transitional Council (STC). The STC, backed by the UAE, seeks an independent South Yemen, while Saudi Arabia and the UAE pursue diverging interests in the region. The establishment of the Hadhramaut National Council introduces a new player into Yemen's complex political landscape, potentially pushing the country towards decentralization or federalization. However, experts warn that the ongoing conflict and rivalries may hinder any peaceful resolution, with the UN continuing to advocate for an inclusive political process.

The Abu Dhabi Hindu Mandir: Strengthening the soft power narrative of India and the UAE
13 Feb 2023  |  Times of India Blog  |  English  |  Cultural Diplomacy
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the UAE includes the inauguration of the BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi, the first Hindu temple in the city. This event is significant for both India and the UAE, enhancing their soft power and bilateral relations. For India, the temple symbolizes the growing influence of its culture and foreign policy success, while for the UAE, it strengthens ties with the Indian diaspora and positions the country as a moderate and liberal state in competition with Saudi Arabia. The article also touches on the broader geopolitical and economic dynamics in the Gulf region, including the UAE's strategic interests and its rivalry with Saudi Arabia.

Yemen In Crisis: Knife-edge ceasefire forces fragile hope
01 Oct 2023  |  www.newarab.com  |  English  |  Middle East Politics
Helen Lackner's book 'Yemen in Crisis: Devastating Conflict, Fragile Hope' offers a comprehensive analysis of Yemen's conflict, emphasizing the humanitarian crisis and the role of international actors. Lackner critiques the UN's 'bunkerization' policy and highlights the need for sustainable development in Yemen. The ongoing Saudi-Houthi negotiations are discussed, with Lackner expressing skepticism about their potential outcomes. The book also addresses Yemen's environmental challenges, particularly water scarcity, and calls for a shift from emergency aid to long-term development.

Yemen won't see peace without addressing southern demands: Separatist leader
05 Oct 2023  |  Middle East Eye  |  English  |  Southern Yemen Independence
Despite recent progress in peace talks in Sweden, the war in Yemen will only end when southern demands for independence are addressed, according to Ahmed Omar bin Farid of the Southern Transitional Council (STC). The STC, excluded from the talks, insists that any peace agreement must include southern aspirations to avoid future unrest. The UN's focus on the Houthi-government conflict is seen as necessary but incomplete without addressing southern grievances. The STC, formed in 2017, has significant support in the south and demands a referendum on independence. The UN's priorities include a broader ceasefire, tackling famine, and economic stabilization, but experts warn that ignoring southern demands could derail peace efforts.

Yemeni women rally to protect the most vulnerable as coronavirus spreads
21 May 2020  |  Middle East Eye  |  English  |  Humanitarian Crisis
Yemeni women are stepping up to protect the most vulnerable as the country grapples with the coronavirus pandemic amidst a prolonged civil war. The conflict between the Saudi-led coalition and the Houthis has exacerbated the crisis, with both sides focusing more on fighting each other than combating the virus. Women like Dr. Zoha Hadid and initiatives such as 'I’m a doctor, I can' are providing critical healthcare and remote consultancy. Organizations like Food4Humanity and Save the Children are also playing vital roles in relief efforts. The situation is dire, with inconsistent death tolls, lack of testing, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure. The article highlights the failures of both the Yemeni government and the Houthis in handling the crisis, while praising the efforts of various humanitarian organizations and individual women on the frontline.

What do Houthi attacks in the Red Sea mean for global trade?
30 Oct 2023  |  www.newarab.com  |  English  |  Red Sea
Houthi attacks in the Red Sea have disrupted global trade, particularly affecting the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical chokepoint for global crude oil and petroleum products. Major shipping companies have rerouted or paused operations, leading to increased fuel costs and extended shipment times. The US-led Operation Prosperity Guardian aims to counter these threats, but its effectiveness is questioned. The Houthis' actions are seen as part of a broader strategy to gain leverage in negotiations with Saudi Arabia and enhance their regional profile. The situation complicates regional dynamics and impacts global supply chains, especially for Europe amid rising energy prices.

Pro-government forces initially took control of the Al-Zahir district in Al-Bayda, Yemen, but internal disagreements between Saudi-backed forces and UAE affiliates led to the Houthis recapturing the area. The Southern Transitional Council and other pro-UAE entities have a history of clashing, contributing to the instability.
