The Fear Of Hindu Rashtra In India
13 Oct 2022  |  www.eurasiareview.com  |  English  |  Politics in India
India, constitutionally a secular nation, is perceived to be moving towards a Hindu Rashtra, dominated by Hindutva forces, with minorities facing discrimination and being treated as second-class citizens. The BJP government, led by Narendra Modi, has been accused of taking steps to suppress Muslims, Christians, and Dalits, including hate crimes, propaganda, and controversial laws like the Citizenship Amendment Act. The abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir is seen as an attempt to change the region's demographics. The article suggests that the rise of Hindutva ideology and anti-Muslim sentiment is threatening the democratic and constitutional rights of minorities, with the potential to destabilize India's secular fabric.

Can Jeetega Bharat Campaign Win 2024?
04 Dec 2023  |  Rediff  |  English  |  Political Campaigns
Jeetega Bharat, a campaign aimed at supporting the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, has launched with the goal of replicating the organizational support provided by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The campaign plans to mobilize 125,000 volunteers across 125 Lok Sabha seats, leveraging crowdfunding for resources. Despite internal contradictions and resistance, the campaign has garnered support from senior opposition leaders and aims to address the lack of synergy within the INDIA bloc. Jeetega Bharat's leadership emphasizes the need for a democratic stance to defeat the BJP and RSS ideologies. The campaign has previously contributed to the BJP's defeat in Karnataka through the Eddelu Karnataka initiative.

Fast-food giant is opening its first-ever, all-vegetarian restaurants in India, but could stoke a religious backlash.
18 Sept 2012  |  Al Jazeera  |  English  |  Fast Food Industry
McDonald's is set to open its first all-vegetarian restaurants in India, targeting the country's large Hindu and Muslim populations who avoid beef and pork, respectively. The fast-food giant, traditionally known for its beef burgers, has adapted its menu to local tastes, with 50% vegetarian offerings like the McAloo Tikki burger. Despite previous controversies, such as the beef flavoring in fries, McDonald's is pushing forward with its vegetarian outlets near religious sites, which has sparked concerns among some about the sanctity of these areas and American economic imperialism. Other American franchises like Domino's and Yum Brands are also expanding their vegetarian options in India, where the fast-food market is rapidly growing. The move by McDonald's has been met with mixed reactions, with some welcoming the vegetarian options and others criticizing the proximity to religious sites as insensitive.

Case registered against Samjhota Express blast perpetrators
08 Jul 2019  |  DAWN.COM  |  English  |  Legal proceedings
A case has been registered by the D-Type Colony police in Faisalabad, Pakistan, on the complaint of Shaukat Ali, a survivor of the 2007 Samjhota Express blast. Ali, who lost five of his children in the incident, has requested the arrest of the perpetrators through Interpol. The blast, which occurred while traveling from Delhi to Lahore, resulted in 68 deaths, including 43 Pakistani citizens. A special court in India acquitted four men accused of the bombing due to a lack of evidence, despite earlier confessions to the media. The accused were allegedly part of a Hindu far-right group, and the attack was investigated by India's NIA. Ali criticized the Indian court's decision for not summoning the surviving victims and for not meeting the fundamentals of justice.

India's slow democratic decline
13 Apr 2024  |  www.fairplanet.org  |  English  |  Political Issues
Concerns are growing about the state of democracy in India as it approaches the 2024 parliamentary election. The BJP-led government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been criticized for democratic erosion, including increased censorship and attacks on minorities. India is classified as 'Partly Free' by Freedom House and as an 'electoral autocracy' by the V-Dem project. The Economist Intelligence Unit labels it a 'flawed democracy.' Modi's government expelled opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and took control of an independent TV channel, worsening India's press freedom ranking. Despite this, Modi maintains high approval ratings. Over two dozen opposition parties have formed the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance to challenge the BJP in the upcoming elections.
