Political Message Intensifies Dispute for Control of the Attorney General's Office
14 Mar 2019  |  Gazeta do Povo  |  Portuguese  |  Politics
The term of Raquel Dodge as head of the Attorney General's Office (PGR) in Brazil ends in September, but the electoral race for her successor has already begun. Some prosecutors express discontent with Dodge's management, while others seek new candidates outside the MPF's leadership. A controversial decision by the CSMPF on March 1st, not to regulate the triple list procedure for the new PGR's selection, was seen by some as a political message to suppress early-career prosecutors' candidacies. The triple list, an informal procedure maintained by the ANPR since 2001, is a consultative vote by active prosecutors to form a list for the President's consideration. The current vice-prosecutor, Luciano Mariz Maia, argued that only sub-prosecutors could hold the PGR position, a stance that has caused division within the MPF. The PGR confirmed that the CSMPF's decision had no regulatory effect. The upcoming triple list vote in June, following the ANPR's new board in May, has sparked discussions of potential candidates, with some favoring a spirit of renewal reflecting the 2018 elections. Meanwhile, Raquel Dodge has faced internal opposition, including a recent petition against her proposal to create specialized prosecutors, which was withdrawn anticipating defeat.

Supreme Court postpones judgment on social networks
17 May 2023  |  jornaldaorla.com.br  |  Portuguese  |  Judiciary
The Brazilian Supreme Court has postponed to June the judgment on the responsibility of social networks for illegal content published on their platforms. The decision was delayed at the request of the reporting justices, Dias Toffoli and Luiz Fux. The case is set against the backdrop of the stalled 'Fake News Bill' in Congress and investigations into companies like Google and Telegram for alleged economic power abuse. The Supreme Court favors legislative action but is prepared to step in to address any congressional omission. The judgment will focus on two cases with general repercussions that challenge Article 19 of the Internet Civil Framework, which currently exempts social media platforms from liability if they do not remove blatantly illegal user posts. The issue has gained urgency following the January 8th insurrectionist acts and subsequent public pressure from various Supreme Court justices for more stringent regulation of social media to prevent the spread of anti-democratic messages.

MEA threatens to release list of government officials owning schools and universities disguised as businessmen
01 Sept 2023  |  Portal S4  |  Portuguese  |  Student Protests
The Movimento de Estudantes Angolanos (MEA) expresses outrage over the high number of young people out of the education system and the sharp increase in private school tuition fees for the 2023/2024 academic year. MEA President Francisco Teixeira accuses the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Finance of secretly meeting to raise tuition fees by 20% without civil society's involvement. Despite multiple complaints to the Procuradoria-geral da República and Serviços de Investigação Criminal, no action has been taken against university and school directors for illegal price hikes. Teixeira claims many private schools and universities are owned by government officials disguised as businessmen. MEA plans to release a list of these officials and demands the Ministry of Education find places for students currently out of the education system.

Angola: Journalists denounce new wave of persecution
31 Oct 2023  |  www.dw.com  |  Portuguese  |  Persecution
Independent journalism in Angola continues to face intimidation and persecution, with recent incidents including attempted kidnappings and threatening messages. The Sindicato dos Jornalistas Angolanos (SJA) calls for urgent intervention from the Procuradoria-Geral da República to address these issues. Activists, including Hitler Chiconde, also report similar threats, even outside Angola. The situation remains unresolved, with ongoing judicial processes against journalists and concerns about the lack of action from the Ministério Público.

Angola: Prominent Figures Officially Linked to Public Funds Embezzlement Not Going to Trial
19 Jul 2023  |  Voice of America  |  Portuguese  |  Asset Seizure
Angolan jurists argue that the restitution of embezzled goods does not absolve the perpetrator from civil or criminal accountability, in light of the Procuradoria-Geral da República's publication of a list of seized assets. The list includes high-profile figures from the ruling party, such as former Vice-President Manuel Vicente and former Sonangol manager Orlando José Veloso, who have not faced any criminal proceedings despite being implicated in embezzlement. Other assets seized relate to textile factories and a project built with public funds, with beneficiaries including former government officials and business executives. Legal experts criticize the government's approach to corruption, noting that the law in Angola is merely a reference and that public probity laws forgive economic crimes when stolen goods are returned. Despite the voluntary return of some assets, many cases remain unresolved, and some individuals have been released from custody due to health reasons.

André Ventura claims they want to arrest him and promises 'real revolution'
26 Oct 2024  |  SIC Notícias  |  Portuguese  |  Law and Order
André Ventura, leader of the Chega party, declared during a protest in front of the Portuguese Assembly that there are attempts to arrest him, but vowed that his party would lead a 'real revolution' against the political system of the last 50 years. He emphasized that no imprisonment could halt their movement, positioning Chega as the only salvation for Portugal. The protest coincided with another demonstration honoring Odair Moniz, who was shot by police. Ventura's statements come amid an investigation by the Procuradoria-Geral da República into his and Pedro Pinto's remarks, as well as a citizen-led criminal complaint.

01 Oct 2023  |  www.voaportugues.com  |  Portuguese  |  Government Accountability
Recent audits by the Inspecção Geral das Finanças of Cabo Verde's Tourism and Environment Funds reveal significant financial irregularities, including direct adjustments in consultancy services without justification, fund misappropriation, double financing, and financial overruns exceeding 100%. Despite existing anti-corruption structures, there is a growing sense of impunity among Cabo Verdeans. The government has yet to approve the reports, promising accountability for those responsible. Opposition leader and political analysts call for more proactive investigations and timely justice to address public resource mismanagement.
