Combined impact of heat and dust on diabetes hospitalization in Kuwait
29 Aug 2024
|
BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care
|
English
| Climate Change
In Kuwait, the interplay of extreme heat and dust storms significantly increases the risk of hospitalization for diabetes patients. The study highlights the vulnerability of diabetics to environmental factors, with heat impairing temperature regulation and dust exacerbating vascular complications. Data from 2017 to 2019 shows a linear increase in hospitalization risk with rising dust levels and a non-linear increase with temperature. The compounded effect of hot and dusty conditions further elevates this risk, underscoring the need for targeted public health strategies. Limitations include potential exposure misclassification and the study's geographic specificity.

Sand and Dust Storms in the MENA Region: A Problem Awaiting Mitigation
15 Sept 2022

Sand and dust storms (SDS) in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region pose significant environmental, health, and economic challenges. These storms disrupt urban life, damage infrastructure, and pose health risks, particularly to vulnerable populations. The phenomenon is exacerbated by climate change, land use changes, and regional conflicts. Mitigation efforts include green belts and regional cooperation, but challenges remain due to political instability and resource disparities. Upcoming UN Climate Change Conferences present an opportunity to prioritize SDS in climate agendas, emphasizing the need for comprehensive, multi-level policies to build resilience against future climate stresses.

Dubai Court Faces Appeal In Multi-Million-Dollar Interest Payment Dispute
24 Jan 2023

| Interest Payments
A Cayman Islands-based investor, The Port Fund, has requested Dubai's highest court to reconsider a ruling related to a dispute over interest payments with Noor Bank. The dispute began when $497 million of The Port Fund's money, proceeds from a project in the Philippines, was frozen at Noor Bank in Dubai in November 2017. The funds were frozen for nearly 15 months due to concerns from Kuwaiti authorities about potential embezzlement. The Port Fund sued Noor Bank for $13.2 million in interest payments, which was initially supported by the Central Bank of the UAE. However, after a series of court cases, the Dubai Court of Cassation ruled in favor of Noor Bank, ordering it to pay only $33,371 in interest. The Port Fund has filed a request for the court to reconsider this decision. Dubai Islamic Bank, which acquired Noor Bank in January 2020, has not commented on the matter.

The move has sparked various responses from the public and professionals. While some see it as a positive addition to Indonesian broadcasting, others emphasize the irreplaceable role of human emotion and journalistic ethics. The transition of power in Kuwait with the passing of Sheikh Nawaf al-Sabah and the appointment of Crown Prince Sheikh Mishal al-Sabah as the new emir is expected to maintain continuity in the country's energy sector. Kuwait aims to increase its crude production capacity to 4 million b/d by 2035 and 2 Bcf/d of non-associated gas by 2040. This move is part of a broader strategy by Abu Dhabi to de-escalate regional tensions and diversify its strategic and economic partnerships beyond its historical reliance on the United States. The decision aligns with ongoing discussions on Iran's nuclear dossier and reflects a regional consensus among Gulf countries to engage with Tehran. Bangladeshi MP Kazi Papul sentenced to four years in Kuwait for human trafficking

The Business Standard

| Election Integrity
Bangladeshi lawmaker Kazi Mohammad Shahid Islam, also known as Kazi Papul, has been sentenced to four years in jail by a Kuwait court for human trafficking and fined 1.9 million dinars. The article discusses the implications of this conviction on his status as a Member of Parliament (MP) in Bangladesh. The Constitution of Bangladesh does not clearly state whether a conviction abroad affects an MP's position. Comparatively, the Supreme Court of India has set precedents for terminating government employees convicted abroad. Legal experts suggest that a similar approach could apply to MPs in Bangladesh. The article also mentions a separate issue where Papul is accused of providing false educational qualifications during the 11th parliamentary elections. The Election Commission's decision on Papul's membership is pending, and the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad must be informed of Papul's punishment for further action. The article concludes that any resolution to the controversy must be found within the constitution.

Breast cancer is a prevalent malignancy in women globally, including Qatar. The study focuses on the role of ITGB1BP1, a novel transcriptional target of CD44-downstream signaling, in breast cancer cell invasion and metastasis. ITGB1BP1, also known as ICAP-1, binds to the cytoplasmic tail of β1 integrin and plays a role in cell motility, metastasis, and integrin binding. The research highlights the involvement of ITGB1BP1 in various oncogenic pathways, including PI3K/AKT and MAPK/ERK, which are critical for tumor cell survival, proliferation, and invasion. The study provides evidence supporting the hypothesis that ITGB1BP1 is a downstream target of CD44/HA interaction, promoting tumor cell invasion and metastasis.
