Merkel seeks alternatives to Russian gas

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is visiting Azerbaijan to discuss the development of a southern pipeline, the Southern Gas Corridor, which aims to transport gas from the Caspian Sea to Europe, bypassing Russia. This move is part of the EU's strategy to diversify its gas sources. The Shah Deniz II project in Azerbaijan is expected to start supplying gas to Europe by 2020. Merkel's visit also indicates her commitment to the Nord Stream 2 pipeline with Russia, despite criticism from US President Donald Trump, who has accused Germany of being too dependent on Russian gas. Merkel is also looking to protect Ukraine's gas transit revenues amidst the Nord Stream 2 project development. Her trip includes visits to Georgia and Armenia and discussions with Azeri President Ilham Aliyev.

Opportunity or Illusion: What Blocking Russian Grains in the EU Would Mean for Romanian Farmers
23 Jan 2025
|
Ziare.com

Romanian
| Romanian Agriculture
The European Union has implemented new tariffs on Russian grain imports, aiming to reduce their presence in the European market. While these measures are intended to block Russian imports effectively, their impact on Romanian farmers remains uncertain. The tariffs are part of a broader EU strategy to manage trade with Russia, especially following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Despite the high tariffs, Russian grain exports to the EU are minimal, and the overall effect on the European grain market is expected to be limited. Romanian farmers may not see significant opportunities from these changes, as the global grain market remains competitive and dominated by major traders.

Investigation alleges Lactalis breached environmental regulations at several plants and released milk derivatives that killed fish

Lactalis, France's largest dairy company, has been accused of repeatedly polluting French rivers, according to an investigation by Disclose. The year-long investigation revealed that 38 Lactalis production sites breached environmental regulations, leading to the release of milk derivatives into rivers, causing fish deaths. Notable rivers affected include the Loire, Véronne, Seiche, and Isère. Disclose's co-editor-in-chief, Geoffrey Livolsi, highlighted the frequency of pollution and the company's failure to follow regulations. Despite warnings, Lactalis allegedly did not undertake required compliance work. The investigation, which examined 60 of the company's 70 production sites, found over half had violated environmental codes since 2010. Lactalis, which has a significant global presence, acknowledged temporary non-compliances and has invested €60m in wastewater treatment improvements. The report has led to calls for stronger environmental regulations and protections in France.

The article discusses the European Union's Farm to Fork Strategy, which is a central part of the Green Deal, aiming to create sustainable food systems that are fair, healthy, and environmentally-friendly. It highlights the need to address climate change, environmental degradation, and food security within the EU, where 33 million people struggle to afford nutritious meals. The strategy includes reducing reliance on pesticides and antimicrobials, promoting organic farming, and improving animal welfare. A key initiative is the proposed legislative framework for sustainable food systems (FSFS), expected to be adopted by the end of 2023 to facilitate the transition towards sustainability. The EURACTIV Virtual Conference is mentioned as a platform to discuss the strategy's progress and future.
