Keiyo Co-operative Society Members Demand Removal of Chairman Over Embezzlement Claims

Members of the Keiyo Co-operative Society in Eldoret, Kenya, have accused their former chairman, Titus Korir, of embezzlement and have voted for his removal. They allege that Korir was involved in a plot to demolish a society-owned building valued at Ksh500 million without informing the members and took out a Ksh8.4 million loan without member consent. The new chairman, John Chemagut, has vowed to audit the society's accounts and halt any demolition plans. Korir, however, claims he is still the legal chairman and denies any wrongdoing. The society, established in 1956 by farmers, is now facing internal strife over these allegations.

Who gains from Kenya’s dysfunctional music royalty space?

The article discusses the ongoing conflict between Kenyan collective management organisations (CMOs) such as MCSK, KAMP, and PRISK, and the Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO). The CMOs, responsible for licensing and royalty distribution, have faced criticism for corruption, mismanagement, and lack of transparency. KECOBO, empowered to oversee CMO operations, has taken actions including revoking licenses and commissioning audits that revealed financial risks and potential legal liabilities within the CMOs. The board also deregistered the CMOs for noncompliance. The article highlights the conflict of interest with KECOBO's chairman, Mutuma Mathiu, who is also the editorial director of Nation Media Group, and his actions that seem to favor broadcasters over rights holders. Additionally, the article raises concerns about the credibility of Liberty Afrika Technologies, a company involved in royalty distribution, and its CEO's connection to other controversial financial dealings. The music industry professionals in Kenya are calling for a music trade union and intervention from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.

Kenyan police have detained 91 Ethiopian nationals in Kitengela, just outside Nairobi, for being in the country illegally. The arrests were made on a Sunday evening, and all those detained are men under the age of 25. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reported that the individuals were suspected of being smuggled into Kenya in a lorry and were temporarily housed as the smugglers planned their further transit. The police are currently looking for the smugglers responsible for their illegal entry. This incident is part of a recurring pattern where undocumented Ethiopians are arrested in Kenya, either seeking employment or en route to other destinations.
