Halal, health and healing: Will halalopathy bring hope to patients?
01 Oct 2023

| Alternative Medicine
Palestinian scientist Jawad Alzeer, based in Switzerland, has introduced the concept of 'halalopathy,' which integrates modern medicine, halal food, spirituality, and homeopathy to provide Muslims with religious assurances about their medical treatments. The halal pharmaceutical market is growing, with companies like Chemical Company of Malaysia, AJ Biologics, and Abbott Laboratories producing halal medicines. However, the concept faces challenges, including skepticism from within the halal certification community and concerns about its religious connotations. Experts like Farah Naja and Mohammed Ghaly offer cautious support, emphasizing the need for evidence-based practices. Alzeer aims to establish halalopathic research centers and hopes the concept will gain broader acceptance, including among non-Muslims.

| Puerto Rico
The pharmaceutical industry, particularly companies like Abbott and Roche, has been criticized for not providing COVID-19 tests in Puerto Rico despite benefiting from significant tax exemptions. Puerto Rico has faced a low rate of testing compared to the United States, and the government's decision to reopen the economy has been questioned due to the lack of an effective testing and contact tracing program. The report also discusses the pharmaceutical industry's historical and current economic impact on Puerto Rico, including the tax haven status that allows for substantial tax reductions for these companies. The article suggests that the interests of working families and those affected by the pandemic should be prioritized over the profits of pharmaceutical companies.

Voters Mostly Blame Supply Chain Issues for Baby Formula Shortage

Voters attribute the baby formula shortage primarily to supply chain issues, with significant blame also placed on the FDA and Abbott Nutrition. Democrats and Republicans agree on the FDA's role but diverge on other culprits, with Democrats blaming Abbott and Republicans blaming President Joe Biden. The shortage, exacerbated by an FDA recall and Abbott's plant shutdown, has led to widespread distress, prompting emergency imports and legislative action. Abbott's market dominance and the high out-of-stock rates have intensified the crisis, affecting a significant portion of the U.S. electorate.

Abbott has seen success with its cardiac medical device, MitraClip, designed to treat mitral regurgitation (MR). The device, approved by the FDA in 2013, has undergone several iterations and is now being tested in a new clinical trial, REPAIR-MR, to assess its effectiveness for patients who could undergo open heart surgery. The trial will enroll 500 patients across the US, Canada, and Europe. MitraClip has been shown to be cost-effective and improve quality of life in previous studies. The outcome of the trial could influence the adoption of MitraClip in clinical practice, especially with the potential revision of the National Coverage Determination for transcatheter mitral valve repair procedures by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid.

Bioresorbable vascular scaffolds versus everolimus-eluting stents: a biomechanical analysis of the ABSORB III Imaging substudy
25 Apr 2024

| Biomechanics
The ABSORB III Imaging substudy biomechanical analysis revealed that patients randomized to Bioresorbable vascular scaffolds (BVS) compared to everolimus-eluting stents (XV) had no significant differences in post-stent intravascular ultrasound characteristics or underexpansion. However, BVS was associated with a significantly greater proportion of stents with low mean wall shear stress (WSS) and lower WSS values across the stent compared to XV. Low stent WSS was linked to lower contrast velocity, less residual plaque, less stent underexpansion, higher eccentricity index, and BVS placement. Independent predictors of greater length of low WSS were hypertension, BVS placement, lower blood velocity, less residual plaque, and less stent underexpansion. The study suggests that the design of BVS, particularly the thicker strut size, may predispose post-stented vessels to low WSS, potentially mediating adverse healing conditions and increased risk of scaffold thrombosis.
