Epigenetic Features in Newborns Associated with Preadolescence Lung Function and Asthma Acquisition during Adolescence

22 Mar 2024  |  MDPI
The study investigates the association between DNA methylation in newborns and lung function in preadolescence, as well as the risk of asthma acquisition during adolescence. Using data from the Isle of Wight Birth Cohort and the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, the research identifies specific CpG sites linked to lung function and asthma. The findings suggest distinct epigenetic features and biological pathways for lung function and asthma acquisition, highlighting the need for further replication to understand the complex relationships between DNA methylation, lung function, and asthma development.

Experimental Study on Mechanical Properties of Nano-Alumina-Modified Cement Composites Exposed to High Temperatures

31 Dec 2023  |  MDPI
The study investigates the mechanical properties of nano-alumina-modified cement composites (NAMCCs) exposed to high temperatures up to 800°C. The research demonstrates that the addition of nano-alumina (NA) improves the fire resistance and mechanical properties of cement composites. Key findings include a gradual decrease in density and ultrasonic wave velocity, an increase in mass loss, and a reduction in compressive strength, elastic modulus, and flexural strength with rising temperatures. The study identifies three temperature regions (20-400°C, 400-600°C, and 600-800°C) with distinct variations in mechanical performance. The research provides a theoretical basis for enhancing fire resistance in building materials.

Assessing the capacity of high-resolution commercial satellite imagery for grapevine downy mildew detection and surveillance in New York state

10 Nov 2023  |  www.biorxiv.org
Grapevine downy mildew (GDM) poses a significant threat to grapevine yields, with potential for complete crop loss. Current reliance on fungicides has led to resistance, necessitating precision pesticide applications. This study evaluates the effectiveness of high-resolution commercial satellite imagery, specifically PlanetScope and SkySat, for detecting and monitoring GDM in New York vineyards. Random forest models using spectral data from these satellites achieved high classification accuracies for GDM severity. Challenges include cloud cover and low spectral resolution. The research underscores the potential of satellite remote sensing in enhancing grapevine disease surveillance systems.

Revealing Allosteric Mechanism of Amino Acid Binding Proteins from Open to Closed State

17 Oct 2023  |  MDPI
Amino acid binding proteins (AABPs) in Gram-negative bacteria undergo significant conformational changes from open to closed states to bind specific amino acids and initiate nutrient transport. This study investigates the closure mechanisms of three typical AABPs—glutamine binding protein (GlnBP), histidine binding protein (HisJ), and lysine/arginine/ornithine binding protein (LAOBP) in Escherichia coli—using sequence alignment, Gaussian network model (GNM), anisotropic network model (ANM), conventional molecular dynamics (cMD), and neural relational inference molecular dynamics (NRI-MD) simulations. The findings reveal high structural similarity among the AABPs and identify key residues involved in receptor-ligand recognition and allosteric signaling. The study provides insights into the allosteric mechanisms of AABPs and supports the structure-based design of small-molecule oncology drugs.
