Problems in loan payments are being deferred

11 Oct 2018  |  birgun.net
The Turkish government has mandated the restructuring of loans under the Credit Guarantee Fund (KGF) to address non-payment issues amid the economic crisis. This measure legally extends the repayment periods for business loans to a maximum of 8 years and investment loans to up to 13 years, with the possibility of a 12-month grace period. The Minister of Treasury and Finance, Berat Albayrak, announced that non-KGF loans up to 15 million lira for the real sector will also be restructured for up to 24 months with a 6-month grace period. These developments indicate serious repayment problems in the banking sector and suggest a deferral of economic crisis-related issues, potentially leading to greater future risks.

Citizens should hold the government accountable

02 Dec 2017  |  www.dw.com
Political scientist and economist Prof. Yalçın Karatepe criticizes the Turkish government for misrepresenting developments in a corruption case to the public. He emphasizes the need for citizens to demand accountability from the government. Karatepe discusses the potential impact of the case on Turkish politics, including the government's efforts to shape public perception and the opposition's response. He also addresses the possibility of Turkish banks facing penalties in the US and the implications for Turkey's international reputation. The interview suggests that the government may try to deflect economic issues onto the US case in the upcoming election, highlighting the importance of public scrutiny.
