Zimbabwe Raises Legal Age of Sexual Consent from 16 to 18
Last year in May, Zimbabwe's Constitutional Court ruled to increase the legal age of sexual consent from 16 to 18. While many welcomed the decision as a protection for young girls from being forced into early marriages, others argue that the law only specifies the age for marriage, not for sexual consent. Concerns were raised that the law might hinder under-18s from seeking sexual health services. Human rights lawyer Rumbidzai Venge suggested that minors engaging in sexual activities might not be able to access clinics or government hospitals for assistance. Parents like Success Samupambi are against the idea of their children engaging in sexual activities before maturity. Representatives from organizations like the Zimbabwe National Council for the Welfare of Children and the Female Students Network Trust commented on the ruling's implications and potential challenges. The government has been mandated to enact this law within twelve months, with the deadline approaching in April this year. There is no consensus within the government regarding the implementation of the Constitutional Court's decision.
