About Susan
Susan Schulman is an award-winning video/photojournalist/printjournalist. Originally trained as a fine artist, Schulman moved from her native New York to London in 1990 and worked as a filmmaker and editor before turning to photo-journalism full-time in 2000 and video in 2008. During the past fifteen years she has chronicled many of the world’s forgotten tragedies, from the horrors of childbirth in Sierra Leone and child soldiers in Sudan to the wretched plight of gold miners in the Amazon Basin. Through her characteristically frank and humane perspective, she has also captured soldiers and citizens caught up in some of the decade’s major conflicts, most notably from the frontlines of Iraq, Afghanistan, Darfur, Somalia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Her work has been featured in the world’s foremost print and visual media, including The New York Times, The Financial Times, The Guardian, Architectural Digest (France), the Atlantic, VICE, PBS, BBC and Channel Four. She has received numerous commissions from leading international organizations such as the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, the World Food Programme and Marie Stopes International, as well as Britain’s Department for International Development. She was recipient (with Ed Caesar) of Amnesty International UK’s coveted Media Award (2010) for her devastating account of war and suffering in Africa’s Great Lakes region, ‘Congo – The Horror’, which appeared in GQ magazine. She is a regular contributor to UK magazine Delayed Gratification.

Destination Europe: Homecoming
18 Jun 2018  |  thenewhumanitarian.org  |  English  |  Refugee Crisis
The New Humanitarian's special report 'Destination Europe: Homecoming' examines the impact of EU policies and African nation deals on migrants seeking new lives in Europe, focusing on the challenges faced by returnees in Sierra Leone, refugees in France, smugglers in Niger, and migrants in Libyan detention centers. The report follows the story of Mariam Sesay, a Sierra Leonean who sold her father's land to fund a journey to Europe but ended up back in Sierra Leone, disowned by her family and living in destitution. The article details the brutal conditions migrants face on their journey, including rape, starvation, and violence, and the difficult choices they must make, such as whether to return home with the help of the International Organization for Migration's repatriation program. The report also touches on the societal pressures in Sierra Leone to migrate, the allure of Europe, the role of social media, and the harsh realities of the journey that are often downplayed or kept secret. It concludes with the ongoing struggles of returnees to reintegrate and the need for creating opportunities at home to reduce the lure of Europe.
