How Qatar Tells Its Historical and Archaeological Story
The Musheireb Museums in Doha, Qatar, composed of four historic houses, display the foundations of Qatar's transformation. The Bin Jelmood House explores the social history of Qatar, including the cultural and economic contributions of enslaved people. The Company House witnesses the discovery of oil and the advent of electricity. Fahad Al-Turky, the museum's exhibition director, emphasizes the storytelling from the pioneers' perspective and the importance of resilience. The museum's early history and archaeology curator, Alexandrine Guerin, notes the display of hundreds of artifacts, including those from major archaeological sites like Al Hor. El Zubarah, Qatar's largest archaeological site and first UNESCO World Heritage Site, was a bustling trade city in the 18th and 19th centuries, now attracting many visitors interested in the region's history. The site includes remnants of courtyard houses, mosques, and palaces, with a natural layer of sand preserving the city's remains. El Zubarah Fort, built in 1938 by Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani, is part of a complex defense system and now serves as a visitor center providing insights into the daily life of this once pearl-trading city.
