Adama Barrow faces the challenge of rebuilding The Gambia after Yahya Jammeh
Adama Barrow, who was sworn in as The Gambia's president in December, faces the daunting task of rebuilding a nation left in disarray by former autocrat Yahya Jammeh. Barrow's early days saw the release of political prisoners and steps towards human rights improvements, but challenges remain, including illegal detentions and a need for systemic reforms. The Gambia, one of the world's poorest countries, struggles with rural poverty, a declining human development index, and high youth unemployment. Barrow, who has a background in business, has promised civil service and education reforms, as well as efforts to address gender inequality and support youth employment. However, maintaining peace and security, addressing tribal tensions, and combating corruption are also critical issues that Barrow must tackle. The previous regime left the country with significant debt and depleted reserves, complicating the path to recovery.
The Gambia and Senegal Conclude First Talks to Strengthen Bilateral Interests
The Gambia and Senegal have engaged in their first talks through the Presidential Council to enhance bilateral interests. The meeting took place in Banjul from March 11-13, 2018, and was focused on various bilateral issues. This council, which includes experts and ministers from both countries, was established following a joint communique in March 2017 during the Gambian president's visit to Senegal. The council is set to convene every six months, with the location alternating between The Gambia and Senegal, and will be co-chaired by the presidents of the two nations. The aim of these meetings is to provide direction for both governments to deepen their cooperation. The recent meeting was attended by officials from both countries and covered all topics of mutual interest.
The North Bank Evening Standard [TNBES]
The article discusses Senegal's economic performance, highlighting that the country's GDP growth in 2013 was lower than expected at 3.5%, against a forecast of 4%. This shortfall is attributed to underperformance in the agricultural sector, as well as challenges faced by the industrial and extractive industries. The information is based on early estimates by Senegalese authorities and insights from an IMF mission that conducted a review in Senegal as part of the Policy Support Instrument.
The Ivorians stunned by World Cup exit
The article discusses the surprising exit of the Ivory Coast national football team from the World Cup, noting that they have not progressed past the group stages since the 2006 tournament in Germany. In contrast, the article highlights the achievement of the Greek national team, which has advanced to the last 16 for the first time in their history. GMC dissociates itself from G6 letter to the authorities
The Gambia Moral Congress (GMC), an opposition party in the Gambia, has publicly distanced itself from a letter sent to the National Assembly by the Group of Six (G6) opposition parties. The letter from the G6 was in response to the recent execution of nine death row inmates by the Gambian government. The GMC, led by lawyer Mai Ahmad Fatty, clarified that it does not agree with the contents of the G6's letter.
