Access to the internet and Starlink debate in Zimbabwe
Debates in Zimbabwe have focused on whether the government should license Starlink to improve internet connectivity, which has been problematic despite rising data costs. Starlink, a SpaceX satellite internet service, faces regulatory challenges from Potraz, which denies blocking the service but requires a license for operation. Potraz has also made it illegal to use, distribute, or advertise Starlink services, leading to arrests. The author questions the government's willingness to license Starlink and suggests that Potraz's approach is too stringent, potentially stifling competition and innovation in the telecommunications sector. The article also raises concerns about job losses, foreign currency outflow, and national security risks associated with allowing Starlink to operate in Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe: A Case for the Abolishment of the Death Penalty in Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe's Cabinet has approved principles of a bill to abolish the death penalty, a practice not enforced since 2005 but still legally in place. The death penalty is criticized for being cruel, inhumane, and discriminatory, as it only applies to men. Legal cases such as Furman v Georgia and Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace in Zimbabwe v Attorney General highlight the incompatibility of the death penalty with evolving standards of decency. Studies suggest the death penalty does not deter crime, and the risk of executing innocent individuals is irreversible. The article argues for the abolition of the death penalty in Zimbabwe, citing its colonial roots, lack of deterrence, discriminatory nature, and the potential for irreversible mistakes.
Mnangagwa third term bid, what does the law say?
The article examines the legal framework surrounding President Mnangagwa's potential bid for a third term in office, as declared by some Zanu PF leaders. It outlines the constitutional provisions that limit a president to two five-year terms and the complex process required to amend these limits, including the need for a two-thirds majority in both houses of Parliament and possibly a national referendum. The article emphasizes the rigidity of Zimbabwe's Constitution and the significant hurdles that must be overcome to extend or abolish presidential term limits.
State Of Readiness For Newly Licensed Community Radios To Operate
Zimbabwe has recently licensed several community radio stations after years of advocacy by organizations like the Media Institute of Southern Africa and the Zimbabwe Association of Community Radio Stations. Despite the progress, challenges remain, including lack of funding, equipment, and technological resources. The Broadcasting Services Act restricts foreign investment, further complicating the situation. Recommendations include continuous training, resource mobilization, and legal reforms to ensure editorial independence and sustainable operations for community radios. The government and regulatory bodies are urged to adopt transparent, non-partisan practices and respect media freedoms.

The piece underscores the constitutional protections for communal land inhabitants and the ambiguities in the legal regime that lead to power struggles and double allocations.

Robert Mugabe; an opportunist, ambitious failure who hijacked a people’s revolution
Robert Mugabe, born in 1924, became a prominent figure in Zimbabwean politics, initially gaining attention in the 1960s. Despite his significant role in the nationalist movements, he was often seen as an opportunist who joined key organizations like the National Democratic Party and Zimbabwe African National Union after their formation. His leadership was marked by internal purges, rivalry, and controversial decisions, including the Gukurahundi atrocities and the implementation of the Economic Structural Adjustment Program, which led to economic decline. Mugabe's tenure saw the rise of the Movement for Democratic Change and increasing factionalism within his party. His rule ended in 2017 when he was deposed by the military. The article portrays Mugabe as an ambitious failure who hijacked a people's revolution.

Women’s History Month: A reflection on women's marriage rights
Zimbabwe's 2013 Constitution and subsequent legal reforms have significantly advanced women's rights, particularly in marriage and property ownership. The Constitution mandates gender equality and protection of women's rights in various spheres, including employment, political participation, and social activities. Despite these advancements, there are still gaps in the law, particularly regarding property rights during the subsistence of marriage. The courts have called for further reforms to ensure equitable treatment of women. The new Marriages Act aims to consolidate marriage laws and provide equal rights and obligations to all types of marriages, including customary and civil partnerships, thereby offering greater protection to women.
