He discussed the role of SONA, its affiliation with the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO), and the objectives of the 15th biennial SONA conference held in Accra, Ghana. The conference, which was rescheduled to October 2021, focused on neurological diseases in Africa, a topic that has not received adequate attention on the continent. Ihunwo called for support from national governments, agencies, corporate entities, and media in Africa to fund research and create knowledge bases for citizens. He highlighted the importance of brain awareness activities, especially among the youth, and the translation of information into local languages. The conference also aimed to engage stakeholders in discussions on mental health wellness and drug addiction responses in African countries. Ihunwo, a professor of anatomy and neuroscientist at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, shared his research interests and his tenure as Secretary-General of SONA.
Cybersecurity professionals urged to support implementation of Cybersecurity Act
At a sensitisation workshop in Accra, the acting Director-General of the Cyber Security Authority, Dr Albert Antwi-Boasiako, highlighted the importance of the new Cybersecurity Act 1038 of 2020 for Ghana. He emphasized the critical role of cybersecurity professionals in implementing the Act's provisions, which include protection of critical information infrastructure, incident reporting, licensing, and lawful data access for law enforcement. The Minister for Communication and Digitalisation, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, urged Ghanaians to assess risks and hire competent cybersecurity personnel. She also noted the need for a legal framework to protect cyberspace and regulate the industry. Antwi-Boasiako appealed for budgetary allocations to support local cybersecurity initiatives, while Owusu-Ekuful tasked the Authority to develop certification standards for cyber experts and to research Ghana's cybersecurity workforce needs for the next five years.
