Red Sea: The frigate 'Hydra' opened fire on drones providing protection to a commercial ship

The Greek frigate 'Hydra' engaged in its first operation under the EU's 'Aspides' mission in the Gulf of Aden, opening fire on two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) operated by Houthi forces, which subsequently retreated. The incident occurred on March 13, 2024, as the frigate was escorting the Panama-flagged, Italian-interest container ship 'Gina' to the port of Djibouti. The UAVs were detected by the frigate's radar, deemed suspicious, and later classified as hostile when they failed to emit a friendly signal. After visual confirmation, the frigate fired approximately four shots, causing the UAVs to turn north and withdraw. Greek Minister of National Defense Nikos Dendias expressed pride in the operations protecting national interests, while government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis confirmed the frigate continued its mission without issues. This marks the first time a Greek naval surface vessel has used its main armament since the 'Lesvos' armament carrier during the events in Cyprus in 1974. Opposition parties have reacted to the incident.
