After the export ban decision.. A severe crisis hits fruit farmers in Taiwan

25 Oct 2021  |  A24 News Agency
China's decision to ban the import of Taiwanese fruits such as apples and custard apples has caused a significant economic loss for some farmers in Taiwan, who export over 90% of their products. The crisis is exacerbated by the recent expansion of agricultural land in Taiwan and the lack of marketing channels. Taiwan's fruit exports exceed one billion dollars, and in response to the ban, Taiwan's Minister of Agriculture, Chen Chi-chung, announced that the government will spend about 100 million Taiwanese dollars (3.60 million US dollars) to help the affected farmers, aiming to boost local sales and exports to other markets like Singapore and Malaysia. Taiwan, known for its thriving fruit cultivation, had over 90% of its pineapple exports going to China last year. The government has requested Taiwanese companies to make bulk purchases and seek alternative export markets. Taiwan's economy, which separated from China at the end of the civil war in 1949, is estimated to be around 390 billion dollars.
