A look at why there are fewer COVID-19 cases among women in Africa
Women account for a slightly smaller proportion of COVID-19 infections and deaths compared to men in Africa, with factors such as workforce participation, biological, behavioral, and social elements potentially contributing to this disparity. Despite women being a significant part of the health workforce, they are less likely to die from COVID-19. The pandemic has exacerbated existing vulnerabilities for women, including increased maternal deaths, complications from abortions, and domestic violence. Economic impacts have also disproportionately affected women, particularly those in informal sector jobs. WHO is collaborating with countries to mitigate these impacts through various health initiatives.
