Witness appeals on two incidents
Stornoway police are seeking public assistance for two separate incidents involving property damage. The first incident involves a broken window at the Co-op convenience store on Cromwell Street, reported on 6 February. The second incident involves a blue transit-type van reversing into another vehicle at Donald Campbell Motors on 8 February. Police are urging anyone with information to contact them.
Gael Force celebrates 40 years with book
Gael Force Group, a marine equipment business founded in Stornoway, is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a special limited edition book detailing its growth from an initial idea by founder Stewart Graham to a company with annual sales over £40 million. The book includes stories, photographs, and showcases some of the firm's equipment. Despite now being based in Inverness, Gael Force maintains strong ties to its Hebridean roots, with contributions to local memorials. Stewart Graham reflects on the company's success, attributing it to stakeholder support, particularly from the islands, and looks forward to future growth and innovation in fish farming systems.
Art Festival chief to address An Lanntair
Kim McAleese, Director of the Edinburgh Art Festival, is set to speak at An Lanntair's Art Gathering in Lewis, alongside local artist Mairi Gillies. The event, funded by the Foyle Foundation, aims to connect island artists with influential figures in Scotland's art scene. McAleese will share her insights on art in rural areas and her extensive experience in the arts sector. Andrew Eaton Lewis, Artist Support Co-ordinator at An Lanntair, highlights the importance of such events for artists in remote locations. The gathering will also feature discussions on the creative potential of darkness, led by Mairi Gillies.
Launch date announced for first Turkish-built ferry
Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) has set a launch date for the MV Isle of Islay, the first of four ferries being built in Turkey, signaling progress for Scotland's island communities. The ferry, due to serve Islay and Jura, will launch on March 16 at the Cemre Marin Endustri shipyard. Two additional vessels are under construction at Ferguson Shipyard, which has been criticized for delays and cost overruns. The new ferries are part of a government commitment to deliver six new vessels by 2026, with the MV Isle of Islay expected to enter service later this year, enhancing capacity and resilience for the ferry network operated by CalMac.
Table tennis returns to the islands
Table tennis has made a comeback on the Isle of Lewis, driven by coach Ken Macleod and the newly formed Barvas Table Tennis Club. The club, which meets on Monday evenings, has attracted around 25 adult members and numerous juniors. The initiative aims to revive the sport in the Western Isles, similar to the recent resurgence in Shetland. The club emphasizes community involvement and inclusivity, welcoming players of all abilities. Table Tennis Scotland has pledged to provide new tables to support the club's growth. Ken Macleod, a seasoned coach with international experience, aims to create a sustainable community club that can thrive independently.
Panto performers prepare for SY shows
Preparations for the pantomime 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' are underway, with the production set to be performed at An Lanntair in Stornoway. The show, produced by Stuart Morrison, features a mix of local and external talent, including David McClelland and Andrew Crawford. The production, which has been in preparation since January 2023, aims to bring a visual spectacle to the stage, blending pop songs and vibrant colors. Local children have been involved in the choreography, ensuring a strong Hebridean element. The pantomime has previously received positive reviews in Peterborough and is expected to be a hit in Stornoway as well.
Research to find islanders' agricultural policy views
Scotland's Rural College (SRUC) has received a £100,000 grant to research island communities' views on upcoming agricultural and land use policy changes. The study, led by Professor Steven Thomson, will focus on the Western Isles, Orkney, and Shetland, and aims to inform Scottish Government policy-makers. The project, funded by the Scottish Government's Community Led Local Development Fund, involves collaboration with local councils and action groups. It seeks to address the impact of policy changes on agriculture and rural economies, considering factors like climate change and ageing populations.
Exhibition on Gaelic song traditions on tour
An interactive exhibition titled 'Seinn Spioradail: Sacred Soundscapes of the Highlands and Islands' will tour Lewis, Uist, and Skye from 2024 to early 2025, featuring Gaelic song traditions. Dr Frances Wilkins of the University of Aberdeen co-curated the exhibition with designer Ronan Martin, based on six years of fieldwork. The exhibition aims to document and share the diminishing sacred singing traditions of the Hebrides, with support from the British Academy, Carnegie Trust, and Bòrd na Gàidhlig. It will include sound recordings, film, objects, a digital archive, and an interactive virtual tour, with a CD and book release planned for later in 2024.
Youtube channel aims to cut new
A YouTube channel called Daily Quiet, featuring short, narrative-free videos of Lewis, is helping people de-stress as they enter 2024. The videos, often under two minutes, showcase serene scenes from the Western Isles, such as beaches and sheep grazing. The anonymous creator, with family roots in North Uist and Skye, started the channel to combat stress from doomscrolling. The channel allows those who cannot visit the shore or machair to experience it virtually and plans to continue providing 'life in the slow lane' content throughout the year.
Hospital wards closed to admissions
Medical Wards 1 and 2 in Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway are closed to new adult medical admissions due to cases of diarrhoea and vomiting. An incident management team is in place to prevent further spread. Exceptions are made for High Dependency Unit and paediatric patients. Visitors are advised to limit visits and follow hygiene protocols. NHS Western Isles reports 20 cases among patients and staff.
