Supkem and rival Islamic groups clash on Idd date
Mainstream Muslim organizations and scholars in Kenya have defended Chief Kadhi Sheikh Ahmed Muhdhar against criticism from the Shura Council and other groups regarding the declaration of Idd-Ul-Fitr. The Supreme Council of Kenyan Muslims (Supkem) Secretary General Abdulghafur al Busaidy accused the Shura Council of trying to divide Muslims and challenge the theological authority of the Chief Kadhi’s office. The Shura Council, led by chairman Abdullahi Abdi, contends that the Chief Kadhi, as a judicial officer, does not have the authority to decide when Muslims should begin and end the fast of Ramadhan or declare Idd-Ul-Fitr. The disagreement stems from differing start dates of Ramadhan and interpretations of the lunar calendar. Al Busaidy asserts that the Chief Kadhi is traditionally recognized as an authority on these matters, while the Shura Council accuses him of overstepping his constitutional role.
