National Mourning for the Victims of May 14
The government of Niamey has declared three days of national mourning starting Thursday to honor the Nigerien soldiers killed last Tuesday near the village of Tongo Tongo in the Tillabéri region. The soldiers were part of a patrol ambushed by heavily armed men.

A resident of Tongo Tongo, Adamou Boubacar, provided a firsthand account of the aftermath of the October 4, 2017 attack that killed four American soldiers. He discovered the bodies of three soldiers and described the scene in detail. The fourth American soldier's body was found by children two days later, some distance from the attack site. The Nigerien government confirmed four of its soldiers were also killed and eight wounded. The joint American-Nigerien patrol was ambushed by terrorists in the Tillabéri region, near the village of Tongo Tongo.
