Wood Industry: A Third Transformation to 'Diversify the Economy and Create More Jobs'
On June 15, 2020, Gabon's Minister of Water and Forests, Lee White, visited the Special Economic Zone of Nkok (ZERP) to monitor the forest-wood sector and the development of the third transformation process. Accompanied by Oswald Séverin Mayounou and Ndouna Ango Auguste, White discussed mechanisms to foster a true third transformation industry with economic operators at GSEZ. He aims to reduce exported lumber and increase exported finished and semi-finished furniture, diversifying the economy, increasing state revenue, and creating jobs. White announced a five-year goal to increase the forestry industry's production capacity and create up to 70,000 jobs, leveraging the Gabonese forest to overcome the current economic crisis caused by the coronavirus. The wood sector contributed 4% to Gabon's GDP in 2013, nearly a third of salaried employment, and 60% of non-oil export revenue.
