Nearly three-quarters of Burundian voters approved a new Constitution in a referendum that allows President Pierre Nkurunziza to potentially remain in power until 2034. The electoral commission announced on May 21 that the constitutional reform was approved by 73% of voters. The new Constitution enables Nkurunziza to seek two seven-year terms starting in 2020 and consolidates executive power in his hands. The opposition and human rights organizations claim the vote was held in a climate of fear and intimidation, with Human Rights Watch reporting at least 15 opposition members killed in recent months.
