13th Anniversary of the Jasmine Revolution in Tunisia
In Tunisia, thousands gathered in the capital to protest on the 13th anniversary of the Jasmine Revolution, which began with the self-immolation of street vendor Muhammed Bouazizi on December 17, 2010. Demonstrators called for the resignation of President Kays Said due to his 'extraordinary measures' taken since July 25, 2021, which included dismissing the prime minister, freezing parliament's powers, and later dissolving the High Judicial Council. A referendum on July 25, 2022, saw a new constitution approved with 94.6% 'yes' votes amid a 30.5% turnout, and a general election on December 17, 2022, had only an 8.8% turnout. Opposition to Said's decisions has been growing since July 2021.
