Are Aspects of Twitter Use Associated with Reduced Depressive Symptoms? The Moderating Role of In-Person Social Support
The study explored the relationship between Twitter use, in-person social support, and depression. It involved 308 adults over a 4-month period, testing the social compensation hypothesis which suggests that social media can be more beneficial for those with lower in-person social support. The study found that for most measures, Twitter activity and the size of one's Twitter network were positively associated with reduced depression symptoms, especially for individuals with less in-person social support. However, the sentiment of Tweets did not show an interaction effect, but it did have a beneficial main effect that countered the negative impact of low in-person social support.
