Relief for rugby players facing gang-rape charge
A Nairobi court has reduced the bond terms for two national rugby team players, Lawrence Frank Wanyama and Alex Mahaga Olaba, who are facing a gang rape charge. The bond was lowered to a Sh500,000 bond with surety or a Sh100,000 cash bail, down from the initial Sh1 million bond and Sh500,000 cash bail. Their lawyer, Wafula Simiyu, argued for leniency due to their financial situation as jobless university students who rely on appearance allowances. The players denied the charges and the trial is set for May 16, with the prosecution having seven witnesses.
Two in city cemetery land scandal jailed
Two men, Boniface Okerosi Misera and Cephas Kamande Mwaura, were sentenced to two years in prison for their involvement in a Sh283 million Nairobi City Council cemetery scandal, resulting in a public loss of nearly Sh160 million. Misera, a former procurement officer, and Mwaura, a land surveyor, were also fined Sh40 million and Sh37.2 million respectively. The court detailed their fraudulent scheme involving doctored land sale agreements and tender committee minutes, with evidence corroborated by multiple witnesses, including the landowner Fredrick Musyoki Kilonzi.
Key Nairobi premises face power cut over Sh732m debt
The High Court has authorized Kenya Power to disconnect electricity to various Nairobi County government premises, including public hospitals and schools, due to an unpaid debt of Sh732 million. Justice John Mativo dismissed the county government's case to prevent the disconnection, stating that Kenya Power is legally entitled to demand payment. The judge criticized the county government for not seeking alternative dispute resolution and for bringing the issue to the constitutional court without raising any constitutional questions.

Could little brush bring down cases of this killer cancer?
Carol Ng’ang’a, a cervical cancer survivor, advocates for cervical cancer screening through her NGO, HELD Sister Foundation. Despite the fear and discomfort associated with Pap smears, a new method called Cobas HPV, which allows women to collect their own samples using a soft brush, is gaining popularity in Kenya. This method is seen as less invasive and more accurate, potentially increasing screening rates and reducing cervical cancer cases. However, cost remains a barrier for many women. Medical professionals like Margaret Njoki and Dr. Rabia Mukadam highlight the benefits and accuracy of this new screening method.

Agencies ‘ignored intelligence reports’ Shabaab were in Boni Forest
The article discusses the failure of the Kenyan military and police to act on intelligence reports from as early as 2012 about Al-Shabaab setting up a base in Boni Forest, Lamu County. This inaction has been linked to numerous deaths from subsequent attacks by the group. Al-Shabaab's presence in the forest was part of a strategy to retaliate against Kenyan soldiers' deployment in Somalia. The group established training bases and carried out attacks in various towns to distract security agencies. Despite intelligence reports from the National Intelligence Service (NIS) to the National Police Service (NPS) and Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), there was a lack of effective response. The article also touches on the local support network for Al-Shabaab, the impact on local communities, and the political implications of the attacks, including the wrongful arrest of Lamu Governor Issa Timamy. President Uhuru Kenyatta's changing stance on the identity of the attackers is also mentioned, as well as the frustration of Lamu residents with the ongoing threat in the forest.
