Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival
On June 11, 1922, 'Nanook of the North' premiered in New York, showcasing the life of an Inuit hunter and his family, marking a transformation in cinema as 'the creative treatment of actuality.' The film's production featured a collaborative approach with the Inuit, including feedback and participation in filming, which is now seen as a 'participatory method.' Despite its flaws, 'Nanook' is celebrated within Inuit culture, especially by the descendants of its subjects. The centenary of the film highlights its cinematic importance and the significant contribution of Inuit culture to Robert Flaherty's artistic vision.
