There have been different opinions about the suspension of fishing activities for ten days each in Lake Victoria. There are those who believe that the government's action will help to increase the availability of fish while others believe that the action deprives them of income
Christmas and the hardships of life, leaders' message to the citizens
Christians in Tanzania joined others worldwide in celebrating Christmas, a day commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. Celebrations include various religious activities, feasting, and family gatherings. Diana Trazius from Mwanza expressed gratitude for the day despite challenges, including floods in Hanang. Aman Victor shared his positive reception of Christmas and mentioned economic difficulties faced in 2023. Pope Francis, during the Christmas Eve Mass at St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, called for peace amidst ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflicts.
How Tanzania's fishing ban is causing ripples in Lake Victoria
Tanzania's government imposed a 10-day fishing ban during each lunar cycle on Lake Victoria to allow fish species like sardines and Furu to breed, extending regulations from 2009. This conservation effort has led to mixed reactions, with fisherfolk in regions like Mwanza, Kagera, Geita, Mara, and Simuyu facing livelihood disruptions. While some, like Samwel Nyerembe, support the ban citing increased fish reproduction, others, including fishermen and fishmongers, express concerns over the impact on their income and survival. The Mwanza Fishermen's Association notes that thousands of families rely solely on fishing. The government, referencing the Fisheries Regulations of 2009, defends the ban as necessary for increasing spawning and easing pressure on the lake.
