Decolonizing a Nonprofit and Becoming a Community

04 Apr 2024  |  ssir.org
OneVillage Partners, a nonprofit based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, has been working to address multidimensional poverty in Sierra Leone through community-led partnerships and projects. The organization, founded by Jeff Hall in 2005, has facilitated water and sanitation projects, healthcare clinic renovations, and gender equity programs, leading to significant improvements in community health and infrastructure. Following the police murder of George Floyd, the organization has been actively working to decolonize itself by shifting power and increasing local representation in its leadership and operations. OneVillage Partners plans to expand its presence across Sierra Leone and transition to a leadership structure led by Sierra Leoneans, with a commitment to learning from its journey towards more effective community-led values.

Plastic waste risks marine livelihoods in Sierra Leone

04 Apr 2024  |  un.org
Sierra Leone faces a significant plastic waste problem that affects marine life and the livelihoods of its fishing communities. The country, with a 402-kilometer coastline on the Atlantic Ocean, relies heavily on fishing, which provides 80% of its protein needs and employs around 500,000 people. Despite efforts by various stakeholders to manage waste and protect the environment, challenges such as lack of awareness, insufficient recycling, and lax enforcement of environmental laws persist. Environmental activists emphasize the need for better information and stricter adherence to international environmental agreements to mitigate the impact of plastic waste on the ocean and marine biodiversity.

Sierra Leone: ex-president allowed to travel on medical grounds

18 Jan 2024  |  www.africanews.com
Sierra Leone's former president Ernest Bai Koroma has been granted permission by a high court in Freetown to travel abroad for medical reasons. Accused of treason and other offences related to a failed coup in November, Koroma must return to Sierra Leone by March 6 to appear before the court. His lead counsel, Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara, mentioned a gag order preventing further comments on the ruling. The decision comes amid speculation that Koroma may go into exile in Nigeria if charges are dropped. The failed coup involved gunmen breaking into a military armoury and prisons, freeing nearly 2,000 inmates, with around 30 people charged for their roles in the mutiny.

Plastic waste risks marine livelihoods in Sierra Leone

01 Oct 2023  |  Modern Ghana
Plastic waste in Sierra Leone's urban areas, including Freetown, is severely impacting marine life and the livelihoods of local fishermen. Fishermen like Abubakarr Bangura and Abubakarr Conteh struggle with reduced fish catches due to plastic entangling their gear. The problem is exacerbated by the country's significant plastic imports, primarily from Ghana. Efforts to combat the issue include initiatives by the National Tourist Board, Freetown City Council, and various NGOs. However, the lack of formal recycling infrastructure and insufficient public awareness hinder progress. Environmental activist Mosreen Favour Kargbo emphasizes the need for better information and enforcement of environmental protocols.

01 Oct 2023  |  SwitSalone

The Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Amara Jambai, clarified that the release was part of a drill to test preparedness. The incident led to public fear and criticism of the government's document management. Sierra Leone has been Ebola-free since November 7, 2015, and the current outbreak is in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with cases in Uganda.

Sierra Leoneans Call for Upcoming Election Peace

20 Jun 2023  |  www.voaafrica.com
Sierra Leoneans express concerns about maintaining peace during the upcoming June 24 election. Civil society organizations emphasize educating youth about the country's civil war to prevent violence. Voters and students stress the importance of discipline and security. Despite a public pledge for peace by candidates, the main opposition party, APC, alleges attacks and an assassination attempt on its candidate, which the ruling SLPP denies. The ruling party commits to a peaceful campaign.
