The People of Freedom
On June 15, 2023, the funeral of Silvio Berlusconi took place in Milan's Duomo Square, which was less crowded than expected. The procession from Berlusconi's Arcore villa was met with applause, and the presence of President Sergio Mattarella and the homily by Archbishop Mario Enrico Delpini were significant moments. AC Milan's die-hard fans from the Curva Sud showed unified support, honoring Berlusconi's impact on the club. Sparse Monza fans and proud Forza Italia militants were also present. The event marked the end of Berlusconi's perceived immortality, leaving his bourgeois supporters to face the loss of their leader.
Natural
Emanuele Roberto De Carli has spent recent years exploring the relationship between the city, its typical structures, and the natural elements that have increasingly integrated into the urban fabric. The work questions how much of nature still exists and survives in cramped corners, on the margins, and often hidden from the constantly moving 'Homo urbanus.' It suggests that in response to contemporary global changes and the climate crisis, there is a pressing need to conserve and allow as much freedom for natural elements to develop, coexist, and be respected as a fundamental resource for the future city.
Back in Line
Over five hundred asylum seekers braved cold, wind, and rain to queue outside the police headquarters in Milan, hoping to gain entry. The selection process, favoring families, remains unclear even after a month. The situation worsened in December 2022 when the police limited weekly entries to 120, leading to overcrowding and clashes with the police, like those on February 19. Amidst the chaos, a heartwarming moment was provided by Esteban from Peru, who distributed tea and coffee to those waiting. The article calls for immediate intervention to manage the situation.
The Path of Oil
Bagamoyo, a city in Tanzania known for its dark history as a slave trade hub, is now a center for both legal and illegal trade, including palm oil. Despite Tanzania being one of the world's main importers of palm oil, as reported by UNIDO, local production in regions like Kigoma cannot meet domestic demand due to poor infrastructure and outdated cultivation techniques. This has led to the emergence of illicit trade channels. The Tanzanian government's response included establishing a free trade area in Zanzibar. Emanuele De Carli documented the sea arrival and land transport of palm oil containers in Tanzania. The widespread cultivation of palm oil is a leading cause of deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting the uncontrolled and constant spread of this commodity.
The Forgotten Country
The article discusses Afghanistan's return to the global media spotlight in 2021 as American-led international coalition troops began withdrawing from the country, with plans to complete the withdrawal by September 11, 2021. The author, Emanuele Roberto De Carli, reflects on visiting parts of Afghanistan and experiencing a dynamic country that contradicts the mainstream narrative of terrorism, Taliban, and war, challenging existing prejudices.
Bosco La Goccia
The urban landscape of Bovisa, an area known for its industrial glory, is now being reclaimed by nature. The former Officine del Gas, once bustling with noise and life, stand as desolate yet hopeful ruins. These spaces, rich with the stories of past workers, are now inhabited by a generation detached from its history but tasked with passing on its legacy. The area, filled with silent art and sculptures, poses challenges for the future: how to rebuild, regenerate, and rethink such an urban space?
