Edmund Kagire is a journalist based in Kigali, Rwanda. The 35-year old award-winning Rwandan Journalist was until the end of 2018 was working with The East African & Rwanda Today newspapers owned by Nation Media Group (NMG), with 12 years of practice. Currently he has diverted into freelance writing, media and public relation consultancy, offering different services to clients –from content development, publications, social media services, creative writing and research among other things through his company Fendy>Media. He has bagged several awards over the years in Rwanda as an investigative journalist and reporter. With an interest in politics in Rwanda, East Africa and the continent, Edmund Kagire has covered ground-breaking news and investigative stories which have been recognised at the national and regional level. He has also worked for different news agencies as a contributor including Associated Press (AP), Reuters and AFP. He is also an assigned reporter for The African Report and African Cities Magazines published in London. Apart from Journalism, Edmund Kagire is also a Country Peer Reviewer and Researcher (Rwanda) for Global Integrity-a Washington-based research organisation and think tank. He has worked on the Africa Integrity Indicators for 2014, 2016 and 2017. He also serves as a Commissioner and Secretary of Rwanda Media Commission (RMC), a media-self regulatory body and as the Secretary General of Rwanda Journalists Association (ARJ), a journalist’s body. He is also the Treasurer of the Eastern African Journalists Association (EAJA), a regional journalist’s body. He is a Global Media Forum Alumni and a DW Akademie Fellow & Trainer. He has previously worked for the Daily Monitor in Uganda and The New Times, a Rwandan daily and The Independent Uganda. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Development studies from Makerere University, Uganda and several training courses in media.

Rwanda received the 15th group of African refugees and asylum seekers from Libya on Thursday night, as part of the Emergency Transit Mechanism (ETM) initiative. The group of 169 individuals, including men, women, and children, were evacuated in a partnership between the Government of Rwanda, the UNHCR, and the African Union. The evacuees, originating from countries like Eritrea, Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, and South Sudan, will be accommodated at Gashora Transit Center. Since the initiative began in 2019, at least 1,796 individuals have been evacuated to Rwanda, with many finding resettlement in third countries. The IOM reports that 6,600 refugees have been resettled from Rwanda in 2023, with a total of 30,000 since 2010. Rwanda currently hosts over 135,000 refugees, primarily from DR Congo and Burundi.
