World Humanitarian Day Celebrated in Kisangani
The humanitarian community in Orientale Province celebrated World Humanitarian Day in Kisangani on August 19, with OCHA and other UN agencies showcasing their achievements. The region faces humanitarian challenges due to unidentified armed groups, particularly the Lord's Resistance Army in the Bas and Haut Uelé districts, and epidemics like cholera. OCHA reported 494 cholera cases and 29 deaths this year until July, with 12 deaths in the first week of August. The ICRC has fully rehabilitated the Opienge general hospital and used 1000 'Toleka' bicycles to deliver supplies to displaced families. The provincial government expressed gratitude for the humanitarian efforts.
