Burundi presses on with measles vaccination amid fuel shortages

24 Jul 2024  |  www.gavi.org
In Burundi, a national measles vaccination campaign faced significant challenges due to a severe fuel shortage and frequent power cuts, impacting transportation and vaccine refrigeration. Despite these obstacles, the Expanded Vaccination Program (EPI) managed to achieve over 90% of its target, reaching more than two million children. Efforts included prioritizing fuel for vaccination activities and using generators and solar fridges to maintain the cold chain. The situation highlights the vulnerability of public health initiatives to infrastructure issues, with health workers facing increased transport costs and logistical hurdles.

After 30 polio-free years, Burundi fights the paralysing virus

17 Mar 2023  |  www.gavi.org
Burundi declared its first polio epidemic in 30 years after confirming cases of type 2 poliovirus in Isale and Bujumbura Mairie. The outbreak has led to heightened awareness and vaccination efforts, particularly in border areas with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The government, in collaboration with the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, has initiated a vaccination campaign targeting children aged zero to seven, aiming to halt the virus's spread. The epidemic underscores the importance of maintaining high vaccination coverage to prevent vaccine-derived poliovirus outbreaks.
