Theofrida Muginga, a student from the University of Rwanda, is developing 'Mkulima GPT,' a ChatGPT-driven Swahili chatbot designed to support smallholder farmers by diagnosing crop diseases and offering culturally-sensitive agricultural advice. The project, which integrates AI and IoT, aims to bridge the technology gap for farmers with limited resources. 'Mkulima GPT' is notable for its focus on local languages and plans to expand to more African languages. It is currently in testing, with a launch planned for December, and seeks to incorporate feedback from users and experts to enhance its functionality.

Small-scale farmers take over Rwanda’s biggest tea factory

13 Apr 2022  |  africanews.com
Smallholder farmers in Gicumbi district, Rwanda, have become the new owners of the Mulindi factory, one of the country's largest tea suppliers. The factory was handed over by The Wood and The Gatsby Foundations, both British organizations that have supported the farmers since 2012 with finances, technology, and management. The farmers, who produce between 60 to 80 tonnes of green tea per day, expect to see increased profits following the handover. Challenges such as the risk of flooding and aging tea plants remain, but the ownership change is seen as a significant step towards empowering the local farming community.
