Populist Mayor Is Picked to Run Against Taiwan’s President
In Taiwan, the opposition party has nominated Han Kuo-yu, the mayor of Kaohsiung, as its candidate to run against the current President Tsai Ing-wen in the upcoming January election. Han, known for his pro-China stance, won the nomination over Terry Gou, the founder of the company that assembles the world's largest number of iPhones. This election presents a clear choice to voters between a government that leans towards the US, represented by Tsai and the Democratic Progressive Party, and one that favors closer ties with China, represented by Han and the Kuomintang. Tsai's recent visit to New York and speech at Columbia University highlighted strong ties with Washington, which drew criticism from Beijing.
